Mark Lane is an author, lawyer and activist. His was the first voice to publicly question the top secret investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and his bestselling book, Rush to Judgment, was one of the first to question the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. A Citizen’s Dissent recounts the vast efforts of our government and the establishment media to suppress his investigation into the assassination of JFK and to silence and destroy him for his work. His later works on the JFK assassination detailed the involvement of the CIA through an actual trial in which Lane cross-examined multiple agents [Plausible Denial] and the role played by the CIA and Secret Service [Last Word]. He crossed the country speaking at countless colleges and other institutions about the murder of the president sparking the creation of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which looked into the assassinations of Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Freedom Rider while he served in the New York Legislature in 1961, he has defended the rights of the voiceless from his beginnings in East Harlem to Wounded Knee, where he successfully defended the leaders of the American Indian Movement. He freed James Joseph Richardson, a black man framed in rural Florida for the murder of his own seven children, from prison after serving 20 years, many of them on death row [Arcadia]. Intrigue and Intelligence in his Argument

Growing up in New England, I have a great distaste for the sort of hippie or the anti-establishment nut case conspiracy theorists. In college, I wanted to write a paper supporting the Warren Commission's findings in order to spite the nut cases I had grown up around. I picked up this book expecting to tear it's arguments a part, however, Mark Lane ended up converting me. Mark Lane is one of the few people to take Ford's challenge and comb through the many volumes of "evidence" that the Warren Commission left behind. He points out many flaws and out right distortions of facts that the government made in their report. He is no "We did not land on the moon" kind of conspiracy theorist, but more a concerned citizen who was disturb by what he found and decided to write a book on it. His arguments are cohesive, well organized, and supported by many facts. It is a must read for anyone who is researching or interested in the assassination of JFK.

The Conspiracy Theory Critique

I first heard of Mark Lane (ML) in 1961 when he revealed that the Republican Speaker of the NY Assembly was part owner of a firm that could get the contract to build "fallout shelters" in NY state. The bill was defeated, and Mark Lane was later dropped from his Democratic Party office. When ML read the news report of Lee Harvey Oswald's guilt, he wrote an article that noted the contradictions. ML was then asked to be Oswald's lawyer before the Warren Commission. ML continued his investigation into the Warren Report; this book is his critique. ML gave lectures on his findings. David S Lifton was in the audience one day. DSL began to investigate the Warren Report and other articles. He then wrote "Best Evidence", the first book to point to "alterations of the wounds" to cover up the shootings from the front.

The Introduction by Hugh Trevor-Roper says the Warren Commission's function was to pass judgment on the facts given to it. They depended on the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police; did the latter reach a conclusion that was seconded by the Warren Commission? [The book "Act of Treason" by Mark North presents a final judgment and resolution of the JFK Assassination.] Why didn't the Warren Commission have a Devil's Advocate to represent the interests of the accused? The assumption that Oswald acted alone was take for granted: the fix was in. The Warren Report must be judged by the validity of its arguments. Many have found defects in it. HTR says "a pattern was made to emerge out of the evidence .. and seemed to subordinate the evidence to it" (p.10). One of the most important questions is: how did Patrolman Tippit know to stop Oswald? Evidence which seems solid at first fades away like a mirage when it is investigated (p.11). HTR says the Warren Report is NOT a faithful summary of the evidence. There is also evidence that was not presented to the Commission, but should not be rejected out of hand. The Warren Report has a whole series of conclusions based on carefully selected evidence, and ignored evidence that did not support their conclusion. One Commission lawyer said that no court could legally have found Oswald guilty. [Did the quick killing of Oswald point to a wider conspiracy?] The experienced doctors at Parkland Hospital said the wounds came from the front, and so did most of the onlookers there. This circumstantial evidence is more reliable than a "magic bullet" or other planted evidence.

If there is a lack of confidence in the evidence, and the Commission's handling of it, then was the Commission deceived or were they dishonest? Some might claim that the Commission of public figures and professional lawyers could not conspire to cover up a crime. [But isn't all that part of their daily life? See Watergate.] HTR says it could arise from prejudging a case before all the evidence has been seen. This is a very common psychological fact. HTR says the quantity of evidence presented in such a short period of time prevented any objective examination. The Commission accepted the foregone conclusion before they were given the evidence. Page 18 lists many unanswered questions. After forty years only one thing is certain. The conspiracy that killed JFK got away with it.

This 1966 book lacks the photographs that became available many years later. This pioneering book is still a classic critique after forty years. Mark Lane was hired by Lee Harvey Oswald's mother to defend LHO before the Warren Commission. These are ML's comments on the Warren Report.

Chapter 1 tells of the suspicious activity that occurred in the parking lot overlooking Elm St. Chapter 2 asks where the shots came from. 58 of the 90 witnesses questioned said the shots came from the grassy knoll. The actions at the time speak louder than anything said in the following weeks. Chapter 3 says JFK was hit first by a bullet in the throat, an entry wound; JFK had a massive wound in the rear portion of his skull. "Skull matter" was found on the south side of Elm Street; this is consistent with a bullet fired from the north. The police officers to the left of the limousine were spattered, consistent with a bullet fired from the right front. The Zapruder film shows Governor Connally shot from the back about 1.30 seconds after JFK's first wound. This suggests a second shooter.

Chapter 4 is on "The Magic Bullet" which allegedly hit JFK, then struck Governor Connally in his rib and wrist, yet remained in pristine condition. Chapter 5 wonders why a description of Oswald was broadcast at 12:45 pm when he wasn't charged with shooting JFK until the next morning. Oswald wasn't the only absent employee. Chapter 6 tells of the testimony from the 3 men on the fifth floor, and how it was changed for the Commission. Chapter 7 notes the testimony of the other witnesses: the shots sounded like they came from west of the School Book Depositary. None of these witnesses were called before the Commission! Chapter 8 discusses the 7.65 mm Mauser discovered on the sixth floor at 1:22 pm. The next day the 6.5 mm Mannlicher-Carcano was substituted for it! Chapter 9 discusses the tests of the alleged assassin's weapon. None of the experts who fired the weapon could hit the head or neck of the target.

Chapter 10 tells of the fictitious name "A J Hidell" used by Oswald. "Hidell" was the nickname of a Marine who served with Oswald and lived in New Orleans. Who else was entitled to receive mail at that post office box? Chapter 11 shows how the Commission created a story against the eyewitness testimony. Chapter 12 tells how a paraffin test cleared Oswald from firing a rifle that day! The freshly painted boards would give a positive response from both hands. Chapter 13 notes the 43 minutes from leaving the Depository to the shooting of Officer Tippit. No one saw Oswald leave the building. ML analyzes the other problems with the Commission's story. There are discrepancies between the different eyewitnesses stories.

Chapter 14 discusses the eyewitnesses to the shooting of Officer Tippit. One testimony "was inconsistent with the known facts or the Commission's conclusions or both". Chapter 15 says the two other witnesses who saw the killing who saw the killing did not identify Oswald. One who saw two men was warned not to talk - or she might be killed. The four bullets found in Tippet's body could not be matched to Oswald's revolver. There was a problem identifying the four shells. The found jacket had a laundry tag but could not be traced! Chapter 16 tells of the murder of Oswald while in police custody. There were warnings about Oswald's safety, and requests to move Oswald in secret on Saturday, but the Dallas PD held to the announce schedule.

The remaining chapters deal with Jack Ruby, the Oswalds, and the Commission. Later books had more of the facts gained from the Congressional Investigation. This remains one of the first books to critique the Warren Report.

In 1974 George O'Toole published "The Assassination Tapes" which provided objective evidence that LH Oswald was not guilty. Soon Congress reopened the Investigation and came up with a rebuttal of the Warren Commission. Mark North's book "Act of Treason" is one of the best and last explanations of the conspiracy to kill JFK. David Wrone's "The Zapruder Film" explains why LHO was in the front of the building when the shots were fired; movies showed no one at the 6th floor SE window. Lee Harvey Oswald was never convicted of killing JFK, he wasn't even indicted. Claims of his guilt are another Media Hoax put forward to obscure the fact that the powerful conspirators got away with it.

A wise purchase

Hard to put this book down. What a delight to find this resource. The intent of Professor Johnson is to preserve the wealth of knowledge he has found in his lifetime. He is generous. I feel he is respectful to those wanting to learn more. I was glad to find the material easy to understand. This was a wise purchase.

Great text book!

Dr.Johnson's books are well written and easy to read. He probably gives more info than most people want to know, but he is trying to give an in depth study of the material. Where did we go wrong? Partly it is the American system. Bigger, better, faster. Out with the old. In with the new. Mankind ever marching forward, with new ’gee whiz’ technology. Advanced technology is quite successful in the world of iron, electronics, concrete, manufacturing, which are systems manipulating inorganic materials.

We have a unique position in that our livelihood depends on working with living matter that does not bend to the will of mans’ desires. Every living thing, whether plant or animal, has its own course, laid down in genetics developed over thousands of years of natural selection. The natural world cannot be bulldozed into doing what we want.
Our main effort should be to simplify livestock operations with nature as the guide. The first thing we must do is carefully study nature, especially the symbiosis between plants and animals to bring back the original fertility of our soils. Without a deep understanding of these systems, and how they work, we are stumbling in the dark.WARNING: It looks like you have unsaved changes that could be lost. The Time Is Definitely Here!

Chip Hines did a great job writing an entertaining book that explains why the cattle industry is broke and what can be done to fix it. I read this book first and then "How To Not Go Broke Ranching" by Walt Davis. Having been on the Kit Pharo bandwagon for a number of years now, I was not surprised by Chip Hines' views. I agree with the views, but I had to read the book to get a better idea of how to put the plans into action. This is a really good book and I recommend it. As a companion to it, I suggest "How To Not Go Broke Ranching" by Walt Davis, which to me was actually more comprehensive. Not quite as entertaining, but provided better management ideas and specific steps for operation (Walt does "planned grazing" instead of just "rotational grazing"). Now I'm going to get Savory's Holistic Resource Management--it was recommended by both authors.

people, and ranchers, always get hung up on maintaining the status quo. Things have gotten so far out of hand that most people choose to go bankrupt rather than admit they need to change. This book challenges modern day logic and gives you the advice you need to move ahead to a sustainable, profitable operation. With critical thinking, you will make more money and not have to work so hard.

Chip fleshes out some very good information with some thourghly enjoyable (if you are reading about them and not living them) tales of life in cow country. This is a book that you will read once you start it and you will come away with some practical and useful knowledge.

Well, that was...

"I had rather be taken for a fraud, than have seen the many for whom Sherlock Holmes was an ideal and an example shattered and embittered on learning the horrible truth about their paragon." Michael Dibdin's John Watson says on the last pages of this book. Sadly the author didn't share these feelings.

While quite well written the book is unlikely to win any "Best Pastiche"-awards, as the author seems to be among the fans who insist that John Watson was the "real hero" of the Sherlock Holmes canon and sets out to prove his point by utterly ruining Holmes' reputation.

Certainly an arguable take on the matter and the author is within his rights, but this SH-fan is unlikely to reread this tale within her lifetime.

A Potentially Compelling Investigation Left Undone.

Dibdin does an incredibly astute impression of "Watson's" writing style but beyond that, its just recycling and re-interpretation of a lot of Holmes stories, completely devoid of any exploration of the fact that Sherlock Holmes is a classic Sociopath. Again, not a bad read, but except for the "twist" regarding the identities of both Moriarity and Jack the Ripper, most disappointing.

An Authentic, But Profoundly Disturbing Pastiche

For as long as memory serves, this has been a controversial book in Holmesian circles, one which I was warned off reading many years ago, and since being informed of the blasphemies within, have avoided like the plague. I do not appreciate new "interpretations" of the Canon that play with the characters to such an extent as to make them consistently unrecognizable, but herein lies the crux of it. Dibdin is one of a scant few authors with the uncanny ability to summon the very essence of the Great Detective and his doctor - yet while I normally delight in such talent for penning an authentic Watsonian narrative, there was no such elation to be had in these pages. The tone throughout is bleak and somber, though knowing what was to come made it an emotionally difficult, oft times disturbing book to get through.

The most unnerving part of it all is the way in which the Ripper clues are made to run parallel to what we know about Holmes, even several of his cases. Such was never more apparent as in the first 'Dear Boss' letter, which actually gave me chills when read in the context of the book. And it is not necessarily the nature of the explosive plot reveal that was so upsetting, but that the solid facts of both worlds were so eloquently intertwined. In short, this was in character and at least in the book's setting, was remotely plausible. That, I think, is what unsettled me so badly.

Even at this juncture, I am unsure how to rate it. It was exceptionally well written. It was suspenseful, evoked the mood of the Ripper's Whitechapel district, and for the first half of the book, with the investigation still underway, was unquestionably the best Holmes vs. Ripper novel I have read to date. However, if you love Holmes, this is bound to be a profoundly affecting, disturbing book that tosses your emotions into the proverbial wringer. Admittedly, the ending had me in tears. I loved it, while utterly despising it at the same time, especially the way in which it ended. Even then, there is one last act by Holmes that makes you want to love it all over again... while still seething in boiling hot hatred.

Needless to say, after coming to the end, I felt like I had been hit by a truck. It is not the sort of book one can really recommend, only advise other readers what it was and was not. For my own part, I only continued reading because the plot hinged on the final few pages of SIGN, where I can remember being very angry with Watson for so blithely overlooking that statement revealing the extent of Holmes' pain over his impending marriage. It is a point I have only ever seen touched on superficially, while the "what if's" are thoroughly rummaged through here. What I will state is that it is not a sensationalistic or trashy book intended to profit off Holmes, but be aware if you do decide to give it a chance, it *is* as profoundly disturbing as most Holmesians claim it to be.

Dibdin is a genuine (if heretical) devotee of Sherlock Holmes, who is also very well versed in his 'Ripperology', though I think it is fair to say he has written something that has to be the product of the most pernicious plot idea to ever haunt an author. Certainly, it will haunt me for a long time to come.

Do I smell a rat?

I've been reading many of the negative reviews on this page, and I think I see a pattern.
Each review of the kind I'm talking about awards the book one star. Each review is by an anonymous person identified only as "a reader," typically writing from Canada, Australia, the UK, or South Africa. Each review uses terms that an average reader would have a tough time understanding: "hermetic and self-referential rationales," "stacked and constrained syllogisms and heuristics," "factors of early zygote-blastocyst miscarriage and totipotency," "neoplatonic chora," "self-referential epistemologies," "monocausal presuppostions" ... you get the idea.
A common feature in these reviews is a rather vague criticism of Aristotelian logic, without any explanation of why such logic is bad. Another recurring theme is a claim that Beckwith's work cites too few reliable scientific sources ... again, without specifics.
All in all, I think this pattern strongly suggests that there's one person behind a great many of these damning reviews. This person detests the book, has lots of free time to devote to vague, critical, unsupported but intellectual-sounding reviews, and appears to be trying to overwhelm the rest of us by flooding this page with his/her own opinion (masquerading as lots of different people).
When I also consider Dr. Beckwith's unanswered requests for a substantive critique, I must declare that I smell a rat here.
Whoever you are, please spare us your heaps of airy rhetoric. Either send Dr. Beckwith a detailed, well-supported critique and prove your point in the objective marketplace of ideas, or get off your soapbox and spend your time more productively ... elsewhere.
Kudos, Dr. Beckwith. Keep poking holes in the arguments of pro-abortionists and relativists.

Pro-life is true. Case closed.

This book is probably one of the very best books available on the issue of abortion in America. I will have to join the chorus of reviewers who have applauded this fine book. The author, a Ph. D in philosophy, critiques 68 arguments for abortion rights (i.e. "pro-choice) and systematically refutes them.
Professor J.P. Moreland said this about the book:
For some time now we have needed a book that lays out and responds to the various pro-choice arguments in a detailed, systematic way. [This book] does this admirably... It is unique in combining a through catalog of the issues with a sophisticated response that remains accessible to the general reader.
As a brief side note, do not be put off by the negative reviews. The criticism is vague and often does not cite SPECIFIC pages or SPECIFIC arguments; I find such criticism difficult to believe (there are one or two exceptions to this though).
If you are pro-life, then reading this book is invaluable. If you are pro-choice, then you will find this book difficult, for the pro-choice view is hardly the given truth that it is billed to be. However, the author has requested substantive critiques, and has said (see Editorial Reviews for the author's comments) that he has not received them.
Beckwith evaluates MANY abortion rights arguments:
Why don't pro-lifers adopt the babies they don't want aborted? Argument from 'no one knows when life begins,' Argument from privacy, Argument from the dangers of illegal abortion, argument from rape and incest and many of the others. This will help you in discussing the issue with other people, responding to newspaper article and even knowing how to critique professional philosophers that hold to the abortion rights position.
Beckwith also argues for the full humanity of the unborn. The pro-life position that Beckwith defends is as follows:
1. The unborn entity, from the moment of conception, is fully human.
2. It is prima facie wrong to kill an entity which is fully human.
3. Almost every act of abortion is intended to kill the unborn entity, an entity which is fully human.
4. Therefore, almost every act of abortion is prima facie wrong.

Note that the position Beckwith defends is very precise and pro-lifers would do well to adopt his formulation of the argument.
The other parts of the book that do not evaluate abortion rights arguments or argue for the pro-life position are:
Chapter 1: The Possibility of Moral Reasoning
Chapter 2: Why Abortion on Demand Is Legal in America
Chapter 1 deals with the idea of reasoning in morality and shows that the idea of moral relativism (that there are no moral absolutes) is false. For more on relativism, see "Relativism: Feet Planted Firmly in Mid-Air," by Francis Beckwith and Gregory Koukl (see my review).
Chapter 2 explains why abortion for any reason at all is currently legal through all nine months of pregnancy in the United States, contrary to those who claim that it is only legal until the first trimester (the first three months of pregnancy).
Also included are two interesting Socratic dialogues in which Socrates arrives to debate 1988 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis and another in which Socrates discusses Operation Rescue and civil disobedience.
The book has a bibliography and there are a total of 431 footnotes where Beckwith documents his facts, quotations and refers to other philosophers and their works.

Do I smell a rat?

I truly enjoyed Dr. Beckwith's point-by-point refutation of the most common pro-abortion arguments. This book has greatly improved my ability to winsomely and intelligently respond to pro-abortion catchphrases. I look forward to reading Dr. Beckwith's revised version as soon as it appears.
New topic: I'd like to point something out to folks reading the reviews posted here. I've been reading many of the negative reviews on this page, and I think I see a pattern.
Each review of the type I'm talking about awards the book one star. Each review is by an anonymous person identified only as "a reader," typically writing from Canada, Australia, the UK, or South Africa. Each review uses terms that an average reader would have a tough time understanding: "hermetic and self-referential rationales," "stacked and constrained syllogisms and heuristics," "factors of early zygote-blastocyst miscarriage and totipotency," "neoplatonic chora," "self-referential epistemologies," "monocausal presuppostions" ... you get the idea.
