Dr. Trimm's best work yet!!!!

Wow. Just wow. I guess what impressed me most about the Prayer Warrior's Way is that it contains powerful teaching and revelation of the same caliber as Dr. Trimm's previous releases like Rules of Engagement and Commanding Your Morning, but her writing here in PWW is soooo much more personal and intimate than before. This is great if you can't make it to her classes or conferences to sit and learn. For me, the difference between her previous works and PWW is like the difference between an awesome academic lecture from a renowned professor and actually being able to sit down with the professor one on one and hear her heart on the subject. The difference between an incredible teaching and having that same teaching received by way of personal mentorship. If you purchase no other title from Dr. Trimm, make sure you get PWW!!! And by the way I DO highly suggest you purchase the others!!! Though the style is different they are must reads as well!

This book has become one of my favorite books on prayer. I refer to during conversations and in meetings. If you are having trouble praying to God this book will give you reasons for feeling that way. Cindy Trimm truly put herself in this book. I remember reading the first few pages and becoming overwhelm with revelation. I not only needed to pray more I wanted to.

Proof You Shouldn't Judge a Book by its Cover

What sets Thomas Sowell apart from many economists and intellectuals is his ability to present complex ideas with both clarity and simplicity. As he himself once noted, "If academic writings were difficult because of the deep thoughts involved, that might be understandable, even if frustrating. Seldom is that the case, however. Jaw-breaking words often cover up very sloppy thinking." For Sowell, economics is no exception.

In Basic Economics, he reminds you that economics is the study of the use of scarce resources which have alternative uses. And with this fundamental truth in mind we see a master expositor at work. He derives many economic principles from this easily forgotten fact, offering you real-life examples along the way. This book was, of course, written for the layman. In fact, no prior knowledge of economics is needed before you read it. Yet the book is of such breadth and depth that economist Dr. Walter Williams says "it provides an understanding of some economic phenomena that might prove elusive to a Ph.D. economist."

As you read and become familiar with how Sowell thinks, you will yourself begin to think like an economist. You will learn to judge policies not by their proposed goals, but by the incentives they are likely to create, which may have the opposite effect of their intended goals. You will learn to think about not only a policy's immediate effects, but also its effects in the long run, and not only its effects to a specific group of people, but to everyone. In the process, many of your long-held cherished beliefs may be challenged.

Consider, for instance, minimum wage laws. Sowell explains why increasing the price an employer must pay his employees--though put into law for benevolent reasons--can have unintended bad effects, like an increase in unemployment. He also explains why, for similar reasons, rent control decreases the quality of apartment buildings, or why lowering the price of gas can cause a shortage.

This 5th edition of Basic Economics includes a new chapter on international disparities in wealth. An insightful chapter, Sowell explains why some countries enjoy luxury while others suffer poverty, pointing to such commonly overlooked factors as geography and culture. Another addition is that this book ends with a section of questions covering important economic issues. If you don't know the answer to a question, it tells you where in the book you can find it. This is especially helpful for someone forgetful like me, who must regularly return to refresh on economics. It's also helpful for quizzing yourself to see how well you understood the information.

To say that Sowell's books have boring covers and titles is an understatement. But they provide strong evidence for the claim that "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover." I recommend this book as a must-read to everyone, not just to aspiring economists. (I also highly recommend Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson.) However, I would be remiss if I did not include in this review any drawbacks, and there's a big one. Basic Economics will leave you more pessimistic for your country than before you opened it.

This is an absolutely excellent book. For those who gave this book less than a five star rating I think you missed the point.

The truth of the matter is the vast majority of the American population does not have a clue about economic principles and their impact on their daily lives. I strongly recommend it....that includes the uneducated as well as the educated.... and I strongly believe it should be a requirement for anyone who would lead our nation either in politics or in business. (No one should run for President without a solid grasp of its contents). As country we would be in much better shape if it was read and understood by all.

It is very helpful for even those who consider themselves as "knowledgeable" in the field...it will cause you think and probably consider certain aspects of how economics work in the every day world. Yes, it is sometimes "simple" to set a base but it is from this base that leads one into deeper thought about the underlying principles that control the world we live in. As one who has had graduate level economics and finance work I found it quite refreshing. Most of those courses were highly quantitative...and, reading this did make think again It is good to see Dr. Sowell put economics in a format that can be grasped by most lay individuals yet do an outstanding job of giving good concrete examples....without filing a blackboard with equations. For those of you who want more....buy a used graduate level text book or two....but first brush up on your calculus and statistics.

Excellent primer on economics

I've read only a few chapters so far, but I am appreciating his straight forward approach to the fundamentals of economics and how he separates the fundamental principles from the rhetoric of politics and media. I started reading this book because I know very little of the fundamentals of economics and wanted to understand better how the global economy works. I also understand that there are different perspectives and approaches to economics. I chose this book after reading reviews of various books on economics. Sowell is conservative in his approach, but liberal Herbert Gintis of the University of Massachusetts shared these thoughts in his 2007 review of Sowell's book (Review of Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy. Basic Books (2007). Herbert Gintis)

"Sowell's book, Basic Economics, comes pretty close to being a neutral exposition of what economists know about running the economy. There is no statement of fact, no statement of economic principle in this book with which I disagree, even though my background is from the Left, and I have never voted for a Republican in my life, and Sowell is the arch-conservative guru of Hoover Institution fame. I am sure some of my Left colleagues will be shocked at this statement, but I predict that their objections to Sowell's basic principles will be simply wrong."

"Contemporary American liberals will not like this book because it defends free international trade and criticizes many of the types of programs liberals favor. However, I think Sowell is usually correct. On the other hand, there have been monstrously successful liberal program that Sowell does not acknowledge, such as social security, Medicare, EITC, and the welfare system. We need similar programs to deal with world poverty, domestic poverty, environmental destruction, and several other important social issues. The correct way to deal with this problems is to use the market system, but to erect incentives that lead private individuals and firms to act on behalf of the public interest. Only a strongly synergistic pattern of market and state activity can conceivably succeed. Sowell's imbalance in favor of markets is, in this respect, part of the problem rather than part of the cure."

I am also reading When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikket. This book is aimed toward those who are involved in helping the poor through social programs, Christian missions, and the like. The combination of the two books is helping me not only understand underlying economic principles, but also how to apply that knowledge to helping the poor.

About the Author
Dr. John A. Van de Walle was one of the most renowned mathematics educators in the country and the author of Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, the book that, in its seventh edition, continues to be the leading text and resource in the United States and Canada for teaching K-8 mathematics.� John A. Van de Walle graduated cum laude from Bellarmine College in 1965 with a degree in mathematics, earned his master's degree in mathematics at St. Louis University in 1967, and in 1972, earned his doctoral degree in mathematics education from Ohio State University.� He spent most of his career at Virginia Commonwealth University where he was Professor Emeritus and for 29 years taught mathematics education to pre-service and in-service teachers. He retired in 2002, but continued to write and work with teachers to promote mathematics education.� He also served as a consultant to various school systems in the U.S. and Canada.� He was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on its board of directors from 1998 to 2001.� He once said, “It is fun to figure out the puzzle of how children go about making sense of mathematics and then how to help teachers help kids.”� Dr. Van de Walle died at home on December 2, 2006.� He is survived by his wife Sharon of 40 years, his two daughters, and three grand daughters. �

Karen Karp is a Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky).� Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York.� Karen is a co-author of Feisty Females; Inspiring Girls to Think Mathematically, which is aligned with her research interests on teaching mathematics to diverse populations.� With Jennifer, Karen co-edited Growing Professionally: Readings from NCTM Publications for Grades K-8. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).��

� Jennifer M. Bay-Williams is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also co-authored the following books: Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers.� Jennifer serves as the editor of the upcoming NCTM Yearbook (2012) and is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). �

Must have!

If you learned math from traditional methods or algorithms, you must read this book. Math today is so different from how I learned it. This book explains how and why math has changed so much. I recommend it to teachers and parents alike. The author explains how to teach math using problem-solving. The method makes so much more sense than traditional mathematics. The book is filled with activities for every math concept and age that are easy to find, read, and use without much prep or prop. It also has ideas and resources for including literature and technology into math class.
I find it highly valuable as a 3rd year teacher of fifth grade. My district uses the Visual Math program, and this book has helped me understand why visual math works much more than any inservice. I have the fifth edition as a textbook for a methods class, and I'll never leave home without it.

a must have for any elementary - middle school math teacher

This book has not only taught me to teach math effectively but it has changed the way I understand mathematic concepts as well. I was taught math walking step by step through each chapter in a text book, learning skills and not concepts, learning algorithms rather than developing logical reasoning strategies. Van De Walle has suited me as a textbook for myself and a resource for curriculum planning in my sixth grade math class. I am so thankful to have stumbled into this text - it has been a life saver!

Elementary and Middle School Mathematics

The book is good and has many useful ideas and activities for math instruction. The rub is that Amazon doesn't give you the access code which is required to link to a website which contains blackline masters, etc. Their customer service staff is friendly but ineffective in resolving this issue and the publisher doesn't seem to know what to do about it either. Very frustrating! At $120+ for the book, I wouldn't have expected to have these hassles and, ultimately, remain dissatisfied.

Beautiful fusion of East meets West.

This is truly a beautiful book with great recipes for the pastry artist. Note however that most of the recipes require some previous training in baking and pastry production, i.e. more for the professional rather than the novice. However a few of the recipes could be made by weekend bakers. Regardless, this is a wonderful book, with beautiful photographs, well written, and a must for fans of Japanese sweets and the fusion of western baking with Japanese ingredients.

Delightful picutres and recipes for Japanese / French cross recipes for patisseries

Beautiful book full of well written, but difficult recipes for Japanese / French cross recipes for what appear to be wonderful patisseries. The pictures of the patisseries are phenomenal. Some of the recipes give instructions for at least 2 days of work. But hints at making the work a little easier are given.

Great Trading Resource

As an active trader for many years, I've read well over 50 books and taken many classes on trading. Very few of them provided me with useful information I could put to use the day I finished the book. The explanations of how and when to use volume combined with price and the ADX to determine high probability entries and exits is very clear and does work in my daily trading. Even without the THD indicators the book provides great value that can be used daily. With the THD indicators it's excellent. Great job Gail!

Most trading books are endless compilations of indicators and ideas with little actionable information, however, this book is dramatically different. Packed full of usable and actionable information that takes a complicated and often times misunderstood topic and helps it make sense to the point of being usable. Gail's understanding and straight forward approach makes volume analysis useable and applicable to your trading plan today. Thanks Gail for this great work!!

Great accomplishment but keep a notepad handy

I should start by saying that it's not easy to find a Korean history book in English that was actually written by Korean historians and scholars. You can find many authored by US and British authors, and having browsed through some of them, I strongly recommend AVOIDING them - I'll explain at the end of my review.
On to the book: This is a fascinating account of Korean history from ancient times up to the 1980's, a span of over 2000 years. Each chapter covers a different period, and the chapters share the same organization, describing the social, cultural, political, philosophical/religous, scholarly, and military aspects of the period in respective subsections. This makes it easy to later refer to previous chapters and compare different periods. Understandably, the level of detail provided increases along with the stability of the country.
The style and content changes noticeably though after the pre-Industrial Age chapters. The history up to this point is analagous to European medieval history with kings, queens, heroic warriors and devious power struggles to control the throne. However, as the 20th century dawned, Korea was overrun by Japan and roughly half a century of occupation ensued. From this point on, the book's strength is its account of modern Korea and the motivations of the Korean government. This is where accounts by foreign authors invariably fail and take on obvious biases based on the "official" information the Korean government and their own governments have dispensed. Having several Korean relatives both in the US and Korea, I should emphasize that this book's account of modern history is definitely politically liberal and populist. It presents a view of politics that is probably more agreeable to Korean university students and professors and less agreeable to older Korean generations with more conservative views.
As an end-to-end reading experience, I really enjoyed this book. I mention 'keep a notepad handy' in the title of this review, and I really do encourage that. You see, the only major problem I had with this book was that the ancient history would quickly become confusing due to the frequent use of similar names, particularly the names of various kings. Also, while I'm amazed at the balance made between depth and breadth to keep a complete history under a billion pages, some of the descriptions of important historical figures are regrettably short - too short to etch them into your memory. For these reasons, I seriously recommend keeping notes (or heck, use a spreadsheet if you really want to keep this stuff straight) about the major figures and events as you go along. I really, REALLY wish they had provided a summary timeline or at least a summary of the kings as an appendix, but no such luck. If you don't keep notes, you may wind up reading the whole thing, enjoying it immensely, but then being completely incapable of recalling correct names and dates. Hint- if you ever get a Korean history trivia question "which king did ?", just guess King Tejo and you've got about 50/50 odds of being right.
In summary, I highly recommend this book. It's also a great source of inspiration to learn more about specific people, places, and events in Korean history.
[follow-up to my initial statements]
Korean history is best told by Koreans and NOT foreign authors. Why? As shown by the histories of China, Korea, and Japan, "western" culture has often incorrectly interpreted "eastern" culture. For example, western authors frequently confuse which Korean king did what. This is often because they failed to note that kings were typically referred to by one name while alive and another after their death. Also, as with many other countries, the history of Korea contains many events where the Korean government has intentionally hidden or distorted certain aspects of its culture to foreign governments. This is especially true of the relationships between China, Korea, and Japan - those three countries have played cat and mouse with each other for centuries. You can find a Chinese, Korean, and Japanese account of the same historical event and they may have significantly different views. One of them may describe a particular battle as a victory, another calls it a crafty political ploy, and the other calls it an insignificant accident.
I should also clarify that while the author is listed as "Eckert", this was translated into english by a group of American (Harvard??) and Korean scholars/historians. That's it for my diatribe - hope it helps.

Bridging the old and new

It is inevitable that recordings of history come with biases. However, the converged efforts of many scholars of this historical book on Korea is one of the best examples of fair representation. Accurate and insightful, the book begins with the basic introduction of nomadic Korea and with skillful elucidation explores the history from the three unified kingdoms up to Korea in the 80's. Each phase is covered in collaboration by experts of that field. Complete detail to geography, arts and culture only enhances the events that took place. Of the numerous and countless history books I've read for my Master's studies, I highly recommend this book as a "starter" for anyone remotely interested in Korea.

The Place to Begin for Korean History

KOREA OLD AND NEW: A HISTORY is the beginning student's text Korean history has sorely needed. The result of a fruitful partnership between Korean and Western scholars, it is both well-written and researched.
This book is pieced together from two earlier efforts (hence the old and new of the title). Although the second part, containing the latter history of Korea from the mid-19th century to 1990, is more detailed and analytical, the entire book is the best text around. This text has spawned new specialist histories of Choson, Buddhism, and Confucian studies. It is also better edited for typographical and linguistic errors than previous histories.
However, some questions remain, mostly related to the question of Korean nationalism. The authors address the peculiar problem Korea faces: cultural chauvinism combined with dependence on foreign markets, notably Japan and the United States. The authors admirably and courageously document the role of the Japanese and American policies in Korean development, the nature of Pak Chung Hee's regime, and the fortuitous nature of Korean economic recovery, but still cling to cultural nationalist baggage about the cultural, linguistic, and racial unity of the Korean nation, downplaying the numerous historical political entities on the Korean peninsula and significant regional differences.
As Korea becomes more pluralistic and its economy more open, information about the last 5 decades will continue to filter through, but, increasingly this liberalness is purchased with a racial and linguistic chauvinism that threatens to keep studies of Joseon and Koryo wrapped in inviolate sacrality. Although the authors final note of a turn to more participatory evolution of Korean politics, the bigotry and exclusivity of the Korean market is left intact.
One way this is manifested in the book is the separation of political and economic sections, as in the nineteenth and twentieth chapters. The way the Pak regime operated directly impacts how Korea's economy developed. Separating the two discussions, leaves open the fallacy that Korea can continue to develop without political liberalization. It is almost a disguised tribute to Pak and his Japanese mentors. An end to mindless adulation of the supposed "Korean Miracle" is a prerequisite for continued Korean development and development of Korean studies.
The book also needs to be updated for the 1990's, particularly the troubles of the two Kim administrations, because the author's concerns have important policy implications. In Korea, history is immediately played out in the contemporary arena.
This book is the best place for laymen and beginning students to start. it is a model, both in its honesty and authorial collaboration, for future Korean studies.
