Incoherent

This chaotic and rambling book does not rise to the level of coherent scholarship. It reads as if the author simply recorded facts as he came across them and reflections as they occurred to him, and christened their totality a book when they reached sufficient bulk. This means that the book may contain some remark of value here or there but that it is on the whole unreliable, as the author has not conducted systematic research on the topics he is expounding.

For instance, Brown claims that 17th century research "often demonstrated that what some ancients had considered 'line-like' problems like angle trisection ... were really 'solid'" (p. 20), a claim which is backed up by a footnote saying that "Pappus had used the quadratrix ... to trisect ... an angle" (p. 20). This is highly misleading to say the least since Pappus explicitly used the trisection of the angle as an example of a solid problem when motivating his classification in Book IV. In fact, Brown himself gives the demonstration in an appendix: "Here is one of two solutions given by Pappus to trisect an angle using a hyperbola" (p. 271). It is a sign of how disjointed and poorly researched the book is that Brown does not even notice that he is blatantly contradicting himself.

Brown also makes quite a fuss about some relatively harmless ways in which Leibniz's calculus is different from ours, e.g., in being based on curves and their differentials rather than functions and their derivatives. But unfortunately his own analyses are inconsistent with his posturing. For example, when Leibniz states the integral representation of the arcsine, Brown proposes to "verify" it "by what was probably his method" (p. 142). Brown's method is to differentiate sin(arcsin(x)), which is a prototypical instance of the exact opposite of the essence of the Leibnizian calculus in that it is based on functions, inverse functions, and abstract derivatives. Much more likely, and in line with Brown's own characterisation of Leibniz's calculus, is that Leibniz found the result as an arc-length integral, which reflects directly the geometrical meaning of the arcsine and does not involve any mysterious alchemy of functions a la Euler.

This book also proves once again that wherever the revenues of despicably overpriced books such as this are being spent, it is certainly not on proofreading. There are superfluous words ("by from which", p. 144), missing words ("it will always the case", p. 149), double commas (p. 45), and periods at the end of questions (p. 147) but often not at the end of sentences that end with a footnote (e.g. pp. 7, 24, 110, 232).

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Patrick Rothfuss

Q: Were you always a fan of fantasy novels?
A: Always. My first non-picture books were the Narnia Chronicles. After that my mom gave me Ihe Hobbit and Dragonriders. I grew up reading about every fantasy and sci-fi book I could find. I used to go to the local bookstore and look at the paperbacks on the shelf. I read non-fantasy stuff too, of course. But fantasy is where my heart lies. Wait... Should that be "where my heart lays?" I always screw that up.

Q: Who are some of your favorite authors? Favorite books?
A: Hmmm.... How about I post that up as a list?

Q: What are you reading now?
A: Right now I'm reading Capacity, by Tony Balantyne. He was nominated for the Philip K Dick award this last year. I heard him read a piece of the first novel, Recursion, out at Norwescon. I picked it up and got pulled right in. Capacity is the second book in the series. Good writing and cool ideas. Everything I've like best.

Q: How did Kvothe's story come to you? Did you always plan on a trilogy?
A: This story started with Kvothe's character. I knew it was going to be about him from the very beginning. In some ways it's the simplest story possible: it's the story of a man's life. It's the myth of the Hero seen from backstage. It's about the exploration and revelation of a world, but it's also about Kvothe's desire to uncover the truth hidden underneath the stories in his world. The story is a lot of things, I guess. As you can tell, I'm not very good at describing it. I always tell people, "If I could sum it up in 50 words, I wouldn't have needed to write a whole novel about it." I didn't plan it as a trilogy though. I just wrote it and it got to be so long that it had to be broken up into pieces. There were three natural breaking points in the story.... Hence the Trilogy.

Q: What is next for our hero?
A: Hmm..... I don't really believe in spoilers. But I think it's safe to say that Kvothe grows up a little in the second book. He learns more about magic. He learns how to fight, gets tangled up in some court politics, and starts to figure unravel some of the mysteries of romance and relationships, which is really just magic of a different kind, in a way.

Critics are already throwing around comparisons to some of the biggest names in fantasy, including George R. R. Martin, Tad Williams, the recently deceased Robert Jordan, and even Tolkien. They praise Rothfuss's fresh take on the genre's conventions, particularly a shifting narrative that keeps the action moving. At nearly 700 pages, The Name of the Wind isn't meant to be knocked off in a weekend. But readers who pick up Rothfuss now-and, according to critics, that won't be a small number-can say they knew him back when.

I wanted to love it...

Some reliable sources I generally trust recommended and raved about this book. Unfortunately I was ultimately left more unsatisfied and irritated by the time I was finished, which was foreshadowed by those same feelings throughout the novel. I found the writing style ultimately not to my liking, which I'm sure is as subjective of a thing as one can say in writing, but I'll try to pin down my major gripes.

The story felt aimless, meandering, lacking an overall clear purpose. I couldn't reconcile the importance of he events in storyteller Kvothe's world and the purpose of young Kvothe's life. I wish I could explain this better.

Rothfuss loves to end his chapters with what seemed in the beginning like a clever quip to serve as a cliffhanger to entice further reading. Things were hinted at with seeming importance that teased of exciting events, possibly in the next chapter, possibly later in the book. Eventually I was dismayed to only be left with the underwhelming and repeated promise of a wolf that I never really saw. We see this often in tv series writing when watching what is later dreadfully apparent to be a filler episode where nothing really happens and you feel like the network is just stalling to maintain viewership and extend the duration of the series.

Far be it from me to feel comfortable saying this as a non-writer and casual reader (the internet brings the term Filthy Casual to mind) but the writing just felt very... amateur. Like the kind of story someone young and obviously very intelligent might attempt but ultimately lacking in experience and execution. I don't feel TOO bad about this, though. Think of the way most casual, non musicians can recognize the difference between a professionally produced album and one that isn't. You may not understand the techniques behind audio production, you might have no idea what a compressor does, or the importance of proper mixing; all you know is that the end product feels off. And that's the best analogy I can give to explain my opinion here.

I think I might have enjoyed this book more if I had read it long ago, either when I was a teenager or before I was spoiled by some of the mighty works of folks like Brandon Sanderson who in my opinion are stronger at maintaining a proper feel of urgency and coherency, and those are sadly the two things that I never felt throughout the duration of the book.

To Rothfuss's credit, he has come up with an intriguing, if not altogether exciting system of magic, and I did at least enjoy the atmosphere of the university that he established, I just wish it felt more exciting in the end.

Young Adult fantasy-too much protagonist as a bare chested young man & not much else. Entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying

If you typically give most young adult fantasy 5 stars, you'll probably like this. It has elements which probably most teenagers can relate to in the "coming of age" genre. The story line overflows with "wise mentors". Sex is aluded to, but off-stage, so rates either a G or a PG (reviews of 2nd Book say he makes up for it there). I have no problems with 1-dimensional characterization but of course, that needs to be paid for with gripping action. If your idea of action is saving maidens-in-distress from fires, taming nymphs and saving villagers from animals as big as houses, but which have lived within a couple of miles of them for years without their knowledge (?!) then you'll like this. (Also, theres lots of forboding with nothing resolved). The main conflict is one which to me seems just plain stupid. I found it inexplicable that a character so good at reading people (at 10 years old? come on!) was incapable of reading people. "Does she like me or doesn't she?" gets old real fast-especially when "she" is THROWING herself at him. Pros: an interesting and well constructed world. Author isn't an inept storyteller. Has some realistic elements of teenage angst. Cons: conflicts are juvenile, adults are in the Harry Potter class (ie either stupid and vile or "wise mentors" or detached from reality ). Little actually happens to advance the plot. We get from a 12 year-old student (of acting, music and magic) to a 15 year-old kid who has a goal (revenge) and the intelligence to realize where he needs to be, but not the emotional intelligence (and executive function) to focus on what he needs to do. The first major flaw occurred when he is inexplicably not killed in the forest. He comes across the bad guys, and they essentially give him a pass?? The second was that the academic "Masters" didn't bother to ask:"Where did that candle come from?" Hard to believe in a world where a drop of blood or a single hair acts like a gps locator that there's no way to establish that said candle was from the front desk (avoiding the question about candles in libraries being AT the front desk a semi-public area!!). But this is just typical of modern juvenile literature. The second book sounds even worse, not rushing out to buy it (although I read all 722 pages of the 1st in one sitting).

Why I didn't love The Name of the Wind (even though I really REALLY wanted to!)

After finishing A Song of Ice and Fire Series, I went into GRRM withdrawals. I started Pillars of the Earth, and a few other books that held absolutely on appeal. I am sure I'm missing on a masterpiece but I can't seem to quench my hunger so I heard a lot about The Name of the Wind and my hubby had finished reading it and loved LOVEd it - they said it had more magic, and was far less gory and simpler than A Song of Ice & Fire (Game of Thrones book series for you TV lovers! :)), well, not only does it not compare, comparing books is unfair so I'll rank it as its own standalone piece of work.

I wanted to so much to love The Name of the Wind and to fall in love with Patrick Rothfuss but no matter what I did, I felt no spark, no love, and no magic (pun intended). I tried so much to love - or even LIKE - Kvothe but I couldn't. His smugness, his bravado talk whenever he found himself in trouble, his annoying narration rules for the Chronicler and his mean sarcasm towards Bast are just among a few things that turned me off to this character from the start and could not turn back his luck. As for the plot, I just didn't find it fascinating. It's slow, it spans across a handful of characters, it has boring women with no depth of character, and except for Professor Elodin, not a single fascinating character among the handful we had - Kvothe included. The story moves very slowly forward, if forward at all, and the attention to detail is often misplaced. I'd like details on the confusing parts, not every little aspect of a character moving, breathing, turning their neck or moving their gaze.

The magic is plain confusing - Disclaimer: I am a huge fan of Harry Potter and the little sparkles of magic GRRM affords us, but Patrick's magic was just confusing, and well, uninteresting. The names of people and places are inaccessible to my memory cells, there is no rhyme or reason to the made-up languages, the origins of names. I realize there does not need to be, it's just my personal preference.

So why the 3 stars if I disliked it so much? Well, it held my attention, it was a great first novel for any writer, and if for nothing else other than the hope of a satisfying novel, I finished it and I am glad I exposed myself to a new author. No plans on reading the second book, and I'd like to write this off as just *me* not being able to appreciate a Patrick Rothfuss - much like I'm not able to appreciate a Claude Monet - than a criticism of an accomplished writer's work.

Perhaps someday but I'm still as hungry for good voracious reading as when I finished A Song of Ice and Fire Series.

Micheal Burt has been coaching people hiswhole life. At 6 he found his calling when hislittle league baseball coach told him, “Son,one of these days you’re going to be a greatcoach.” At 15 he started the process, at 19 hewas hired by the second largest high school in Tennessee, and by 22 he was the head coachen route to becoming one of the top coaches in the country. He used his deep methodology of building “the whole person” and inner-engineering people to win in order to build a culture of expectation and success that won five state championships. At 31, after writing four of his twelve books, Coach Burt retired from athletics to coach and develop talent in sales, operations, and acceleration at some of the biggest companies in the world. Motivational speaker Les Brown is well-known for his quote "You have greatness within you." If you need to figure out how to unlock this greatness, then you need Coach Burt's book. Having followed and integrated his philosophy into my life the past couple of years has sent my business and personal life to levels I never thought I'd achieve. Coach Burt is someone you need to get to know. This book gives great examples of how to move from where you are to where you want to be. Good coachs are very hard to find - Coach Burt is among the best.

I read Coach Burts book without really knowing who Coach Burt was. The first chapter in I was already finding ways to improve myself that I never thought about personally. I have had many consultants over the past 10 years but I never thought of needing a coach, until now. This is going to really change my outlook on life and business!

The book investigates the phenomenon of ‘manly homosexuality’, little treated in both masculinity and gay studies on Japan, arguing that desires and individual narratives were constructed within (and not necessarily outside of) the dominant narratives of the nation, manliness and Japanese culture. Overall, this book offers a wide-ranging appraisal of homosexuality and manliness in postwar Japan, that provokes insights into conceptions of Japanese masculinity in general.

Great Journal!

I have Jolene Hart's Eat Pretty cookbook and I have used it extensively. I follow her social media pages as well and love everything she has to say. So it was a no-brainer to get this journal when it came out. It is just as pretty and eye catching as her cookbook. Pretty things motivate me =) May sound funny but it keeps my attention more than a plain black and white print book with no art. The journal is very interactive and the daily food diary is very useful. It may not be enough for the health enthusiast who already knows their stuff but I find it helpful and encouraging for me.

Great food diary!

My daughter has been using this. She intially rejected it when she saw the flowery cover. I thought maybe I would keep it for myself. As I leafed through the pages, I saw lists of foods that help with various ailments. I also noticed the food diary part also asks how a person feels at meal time. I showed it to my teen and she now loves the book!

About the Author

Carlo Batini is full professor of Computer Engineering since 1986, initially at Sapienza – Universit� di Roma, then since 2002 at University of Milano Bicocca. His research interests include eGoverment, information systems and data base modeling and design, data and information quality, and service science. From 1995 to 2003 he was a member of the board of directors of the Authority for Information Technology in Public Administration, where he headed several large scale projects for the modernization of public administration.

Monica Scannapieco is a researcher at Istat, the Italian National Institute of Statistics since 2006. She earned a University Degree in Computer Engineering with honors and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at Sapienza - Universit� di Roma. She is the author of more than 100 papers mainly on data quality, privacy preservation and data integration, published in leading conferences and journals in databases and information systems. She has been involved in several European research projects on data quality and data integration.

Entertaining but also thought provoking

I picked up "400 Things" after reading a Wall Street Journal article which mentioned that Lee Child and other crime writers were fans. Child called it "...a mix of hard-boiled autobiography and street-wise poetry." I don't know that I would go that far but I did enjoy the book.

Written by a thirteen year veteran patrol officer, the book is a collection of stories, observations, little known facts and personal musings told in an affable, straight forward style. I think the author is fairly representative of police officers, if more articulate than most. It may seem controversial in light of current events (This review is written on 11-29-14) but no attempt is made to whitewash police or vilify the citizenry. It merely provides perspective.

Divided into nineteen chapters with 11 to 31 "things cops know", this is a very easy read, with no section or tale running more than a few of pages. People frequently ask if a book contains foul language. Uh, of course this does- generally in the form of quotes not the author throwing it in randomly. I doubt that anyone really expects inner city police work to involve a lot of "Gee Whiz" and "Gosh Darn".

While there are stories and situations that are grim, depressing and even shocking, I did have several "laugh out loud" moments. For example:
"I once heard a coworker observe that my partner Ramon, a fine man but not especially fleet of foot, 'runs like Jed Clampett'."

This is a difficult review to write simply because there is so much to say about this book. It would definitely be a great book club selection. From Plantiga's thoughts on societal issues to the role of the media, I guarantee you will want to discuss it.

Although I would recommend this to everyone (but your favorite TV cop show will never be the same), I can't quite say that I love it. It was an easy book to set aside and return to days later. It was an impulse purchase for me and I do feel some pangs for the loss of a couple of other books I could have purchased for the price. Also, there were a few things that simply annoyed me. For some reason, paragraphs are lifted from the text and inserted into boxes with larger type as though you might have missed it the first time. This appears to be an attempt to make the book longer without adding any value or substance. And, at least in the kindle version, there are formatting problems in the last chapter where entire sentences are repeated.

Aside from these issues, I liked this book a lot and strongly recommend it.

The book pulls you through. Not a dead page in the whole thing. Chases, gunshots, investigations, take-downs, PR dilemmas, hookers, thugs and drugs--they're all here as you would expect, but so is much you wouldn't, including plenty of razor wit and blooming irony. This is the kind of book you want to carry through the house and call out to listeners: "Hey, listen to this!" Especially if you're the author's Dad. Way to go, Son!

400 THINGS COPS KNOW by Adam Plantinga is another book from Quill Driver Books that will join Books, Crooks and Counselors by Leslie Budewitz and others in my personal reference library. Plantinga spent thirteen years as a patrol officer, which he boiled down to observations about life as a street cop, which are practical and blunt when they aren’t funny, heart-rending or chilling.

As a writer, my next manuscript with a police officer as character will be checked against this book to see if I have avoided the errors that pop us so frequently when the uninformed try to write about the uniformed. Do you know how Columbine changed the responses of police departments all over the United States? I do because I read this book and it is just the sort of detail that a cop might drop into conversation with a citizen. It is also the sort of detail that adds a sense of authenticity to a piece of writing.

About the importance of teamwork the author writes, “…if some citizen feels the need to challenge you on why it took seven officers to take the lone suspect into custody the answer is because eight weren’t available.” I remember a news conference in which a police spokesperson was asked why so many shots (Sorry, I don’t remember the exact number.) were fired by a group of officers at a gunman who first opened fire on a police unit. The spokesperson answered in effect — eventually you run out of bullets.

Why do cops toss their cups of coffee out the windows of their squad car when they get a high priority call? Can a car with a powerful engine outrun a cop car? (You may notice I ask questions but I don’t provide answers.) 400 THINGS COPS KNOW provides answers as well as giving hints about how an experienced officer might answer question since an experienced officer wrote the book. I highly recommend this book.

An engaging introduction to vectors and matrices and the algorithms that operate on them, intended for the student who knows how to program. Mathematical concepts and computational problems are motivated by applications in computer science. About the Author
Philip Klein is Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. He was a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award, and has received multiple research grants from the National Science Foundation. He has been made an ACM Fellow in recognition of his contributions to research on graph algorithms. He is a recipient of Brown University’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences. Klein received a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. He has been a Visiting Scientist at Princeton’s Computer Science Department, at MIT’s Mathematics Department, and at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), where he is currently a Research Affiliate. Klein has worked at industry research labs, including Xerox PARC and AT&T Labs, and he has been Chief Scientist at three start-ups. Klein was born and raised in Berkeley, California. He started learning programming in 1974, and started attending meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club a couple of years later. His love for computer science has never abated, but in a chance encounter with E. W. Dijkstra in 1979, he was told that, if he wanted to do computer science, he had better learn some math. His favorite xkcd is 612.

The Kindle version is not the same as recent printed versions and contains errors long since corrected in the print format.

This review is specific to the Kindle version of the book.

The textbook as intended is excellent. As many other readers have noted going back several years, the 1st edition of this book had an over abundance of typographical errors which have been corrected in more recent print versions. Amazon advertises the publication date for the Kindle version as April 7, 2015 but it contains all of the original typographical errors.

When I purchased the Kindle version I knew about the typographical errors of the first edition and I also knew that the recent print editions had been corrected. I purchased the Kindle version as it had a very recent publication date and I was reasonably expecting that it would have been based on a corrected version of the text. I was really disappointed that this was not the case.

While existing print copies of a book can't be updated, the same is not true for digital formats. Amazon has cheapened the Kindle brand by selling old versions of books and tagging them with recent publication dates.

Amazon should be correcting the Kindle version and providing updated versions to all of the readers who have purchased faulty copies.

Many typos in first version

I found this book invaluable while taking the author's course Coding the Matrix on coursera.org. However, this first version was rushed to press with insufficient editing. It is rife with typos, some of which could mislead readers not already familiar with linear algebra. The index is both skimpy and inaccurate. Unless you currently need this book for a course, I recommend waiting for a corrected edition.

If you plan to be an applied scientist read this book!

I am am a retired software engineer who spent my entire career working for an aero-space research company. I have a master's degree in mathematics including graduate level linear algebra. And yet, it took me years on the job to relate the books to the problems we were solving. Professor Klein does much of it with this book. For me, it is the perfect mix of abstract mathematics with real physical problems. I deeply regret not having it back then.
