Indoor Beckett, Maximum Drama Value

Harold Pinter, what more can be said than that he is one of the most important playwrights to come out of England in the past 100+ years.
"The Dumb Waiter," shows Pinter's dark indoor confussion at its best. "The Birthday Party," is twisted and fully capable of playing tricks with a reader's mind.
Anyone who enjoys Pinter, Samual Beckett (Pinter's mentor & author of "Waiting for Godot," as well as countless other pieces), or good absurd theater would be well advised to purchase this set of plays, short stories etc.
Early works of Pinter, show him at his best as a writer and this edition gives a great value. There are a lot of plays, an essay, and a couple of short stories, all in a book that does not cost too much more than an average "Grove Press," single play.
"Complete Works 1," will take you to some fascinating but dark places, and at the end you will be ready and excited to buy the second (then third, then fourth) edition(s) of Pinter's "Complete Works."

The Definitive Pinter.

If you must have Pinter and are short of cash, this volume is THE must have(although I'd recommend all four volumes). Three classic Pinter plays are included in this volume: The Birthday Party, The Room, and The Dumb Waiter. For those of you new to Pinter, more than likely it was one of these plays that turned you on to him. However, the selling point of this volume is not actually the plays, but the outstanding introduction entitled "Writing for the Theatre" which is a 1962 speech made by Pinter himself. Any aspiring playwright as well as those immersed in all that is Pinteresque will find this introduction both profound and useful. On another note, for Pinter completists, be advised that The Birthday Party, The Room, and The Dumb Waiter are on VHS. The Dumb Waiter and The Room are difficult to find, but rest assured they're out there. In short, if you must have Pinter, this is the volume to get.

BB delivers

I should start by saying that yes, I am a BB fan. As a full fledged punk/goth in Detroit during the 80's, I got a free ticket to his concert with Al B. Sure and New Edition and figured "why not go?" and had a blast. He was such a dynamic performer...and that made me a fan to this day. I've followed his career through music, TV, and the tabloids, and I always thought he got the short end of the stick with the media--but it's clearly true when you read the tragedies he's suffered throughout life.

BB delivers the goods: he holds nothing back on his drugs, drinking, bad boy days, crimes, jail time, Whitney, his daughter, and everything in between. It's all in there, and many blanks are filled. He also gives his personal insight to what he was thinking at certain times in his life when the rest of us were wondering just WHAT he was thinking. He even explains the whole Whitney funeral debacle and why he left during the service, and you realize the media did portray it in a skewed light when his reasoning is really very sensible. Now I'm sure some people will argue that it's one sided (duh, it's an autobiography) and of course he'll try to make himself look better....but now that others are corroborating many of his tales in the media (i.e. Whitney's brother finally saying it was he, not BB, who introduced her to drugs), we realize he really did get the short end of that stick during his Whitney days.

That's not to say that he didn't make some huge mistakes--he acknowledges them freely and takes responsibility for most (though there are spots here and there where he makes excuses for certain things rather than taking the reigns on them, but that's OK). In the end, you realize he's just a guy like anyone else, trying to make their way.

Fab read, totally worth the purchase.

Definitely spoke truth

Yes! He has finally told his story much of what we know to be true. People giving this one star and saying he is self serving never liked or will ever like him so pot calling kettle. The Book was very well written and The Break Up chapter was total mind blowing he cast all reservations to the wind and just spoke from his heart. He still protecting her, there are so many OTHER less flattering stories he could've divulged but he didn't. Weeks in Cracks houses, and the sex parties in the home so he was very respectful.

I wish he and his family nothing but the best in the future I also wish the Houston the best and maybe if they read this with an open mind and accept their part the tragedies would cease. You have two other sibling as well as the Daughter in Law fighting substance abuse. This Young Man owned his part in the mess and appears to still be beating himself up about it.

So good to hear Bobby's side of the story. I enjoyed this book. Every page had some very interesting stories. I thought he kept his story about Whitney very tasteful and respectful. I'm sure there was a lot more dirt he could have put in his book, but he chose to take a different route about his feelings. It was just enough for me to get the picture though. Thanks for sharing your story.

Amy Lane is On Fire this year!!! This newest release is just another change from all the other voices in her head. The reality of this story is a less angsty (yeah it still is Amy Lane) story, and is how to bridge two totally different lifestyles and make it work.

James Richards is a white upper class College Professor about 40 ish . He has left his family and job in the Northeast after a terrible break up and betrayal by his lover of five years. He lost not only his self worth emotionally, but he lost his financial life savings as well, stolen by "The ex". James is now living and teaching at South Placer Community College in California. He lives, or exists, with his dog (a Boston terrier) Marlowe.

James has a student in his class that makes teaching worthwhile. Sophie Winchester is smart and her quick tongue makes his classes interesting. Sophie decides to introduce James to her best friend Rafael Ochoa. When James sees Rafael he almost swallows his tongue. He is beautiful, the hottest thing James has ever seen. James feels embarrassed by the difference in their looks and their ages. Rafi is everything James could ever want, and not have... Who could know that Rafi knows what he wants, and James is it!!!

James and Rafi are from two different worlds, a broken W.A.S.P. scholar, and a Latino car mechanic. It is such a gift seeing how Amy builds a bridge with her words so each of these men can bring these two worlds together. Amy brings her broken street Spanish slang into play to make it all the more real. The story is fun, light-hearted, and sweet, giving the reader hope that our dreams can come true.

I loved James because he was so sure he was old, unworthy and unlovable. I loved that he could blush, feel shy, and have been so hurt, but he could maybe overcome it all and try. I loved Rafi because he knew what he wanted, and went for it. I loved that he brought James home to his family, so James could see who he was, opening himself to James. I loved Grandma Noni and her Tarot cards doing the `reading' for James. And for all you pet fans, Marlowe was a treat; named after Christopher Marlowe because James had a thing about He and Shakespeare.

So you can see I loved this story. For those of you who have never gone to `the dark side' and read an M/M book, this one would be a safe bet for all of those of you who still believe in twue lurve. Right Amy?

Fun, touching, excellent story of hope and love

Hope.

Such a wonderful and fragile thing. When we are young, we hope for a bike for Christmas, or a puppy for our birthday. That that cute boy or girl will notice us. We hope to get into a good school. That we get a great great job and a hot car.

We hope for love. For that special someone to be ours.

And sometimes, we just hope that this time it will be real. That we don't get our heart broken. That we have one more try in us...

James is a forty something year old professor at a community college in California. Betrayed by his partner on the East Coast, he has moved out West for a new start. Three years later, he and Marlowe, his Boston Terrier, have each other, and that's enough.

Raphael is a late twenties blue collar Hispanic guy who looks like an underwear model. Unlucky in love, he stays one foot in the closet to make his Catholic family happy. He plays tough guy, but his heart is a tender one.

When Raphael's friend, who just happens to be in James' class, sets them up, will sparks fly or will the past hurts and the age difference keep these two apart?

This book is, at heart, all about hope. James' hope that life hasn't passed him by. That forty doesn't mean the end. That his lying cheating ex didn't kill that spark in him, that fragile hopeful heartbeat of romance and love. And Raphael's hope that someone will take a chance on him and not make him choose love over his family. That being Hispanic working class doesn't mean unlovable. That his fragile painful hope that James will put his heart on the line with him and not leave him hanging out there alone isn't in vain.

"Well, sometimes small dreams had grandeur, he thought with dignity. Sometimes, the small dreams were all a person needed to live."

God, Amy Lane gets it so right.

These two men dare to dream small, but hope bigger. And, thank God, sometimes dreams come true and hopes are answered.

Because when I read this fine, fine book, my hopes were given given wings. Hopes that romance can conquer fear, that love doesn't quit being possible at 40 (or even 50), that there are still men out there who have the balls to say things like "I get laid plenty, baby. I don't remember ever being asked to sleep. There's different kinds of loneliness, Jimmy." and mean it.

So, thank you, Ms.Lane, for writing a beautiful love song to hope.

It's not shakespeare

While I'm usually a huge fan of Amy Lane's work, this was not a favorite. It had all the elements I normally enjoy in a Lane book, I just didn't feel like they worked in this book. One of the things, I didn't enjoy was the phonetic spelling "What witchu, heifer?". Lane calls this code-switching,(the ability to speak proper English with certain people in certain situations and a less formal, slangy English with other people and other situations)which as a language major, I have studied and understand. But it's not pleasant to read. Lane tried so hard to make Rafi extra-Mexican with all this slang and description of his cholo clothing, but all she really does is make him this character who is extremely hard to relate to. The sex scene are mostly brief when they're not "fade to black" (referenced to but not seen on scene) and there are huge jumps in the relationship where developments are referred to rather than shown. This book is a lot of "tell not show" rather than the other way around so I would say save your money and buy any of her other books.

I particularly like chapter 3 in this book where in it discuss the optimal foods, safe foods and bad foods for ketosis. This book consists of strategies on how to lose weight by entering the ketosis state. Also, it has a 30 day plan guidelines. The recipe listed is very delicious and watery in your mouth when reading. I can’t wait to try it!

Good book for a good show

I was glad to finally get this book and read through it. It's a surprisingly breezy read for being over 150 pages. I recommend listening to the combo cast recording while reading through it. A very moving story. The only thing that has me giving it four stars instead of five is the lack of any sort of essay or commentary materials in the book. Of all shows, this is one where there is probably alot to say about the show. All the same, a great buy.

Despite the depth of the Greek crisis, the exorbitant burdens placed upon the working people and the massive popular resistance movement to capitalist policies, there is a definite lack of consistently Marxist analyses of the Greek problem. International debates regarding the Greek crisis have been dominated by orthodox (Neoclassical and neo-Keynesian) approaches.

The heterodox side of these debates has been occupied by Radical Political Economy approaches (usually radical post-Keynesian or Marxo-Keynesian perspectives). Moreover, they are dominated by the ‘financialisation’ thesis which is quite alien to Marxism, neglects the sphere of production and professes that the global crisis is simply a financial crisis that has nothing to do with ‘real’ accumulation and the profit rate.

This book argues that by emphasising the sphere of production and profitability, classical Marxist analysis better explains the Greek crisis than its orthodox and heterodox competitors. The contributors present critiques of the prevalent approaches and offer studies of the Greek crisis that use the methodology and the analytical and empirical tools of classical Marxist Political Economy. In particular, it is shown that the Greek crisis was caused by falling profitability and the ensuing overaccumulation crisis. The ‘broad unequal exchange’ existing between the euro-center and the euro-periphery contributed to Greek capital’s falling profitability. This book enriches the debate about the Greek economic crisis by demonstrating the insights that can be drawn by considering the Marxist alternative to the dominant mainstream and heterodox approaches.

Not one of Laurann's best books. There are 3 separate stories in this book and they were not in the correct order that you should read them. Also all three stories lacked any real plot.

Claws and Fangs

This anthology contains three connected stories. Each story is better than the last, finishing with Lacey and Lethal, which is the best of the three. There are the expected hot love scenes. There is also genuine feeling. Laurann even left room for another story featuring Chase's sister. There is a bit of danger in each story but the good guys win. Just what I like, happy ever after.

The heroes: Blaron, Chase, and Lethal, are big, brawny, honorable, and fall in love at first sight. They are also good and convincing their ladies that it is love and not just lust. You will enjoy the convincing.
