About the Author
Pam Locker is the subject leader for Design for Exhibition and Museums at the University of Lincoln. She has worked as a museum and exhibition designer and consultant for a range of projects and organisations in Britain and Europe. As a Principal Teaching Fellow she has a special interest in the use of communication design in education. She has developed an online resource, 'Pencils and Pixels,' that uses filmed demonstrations to teach design students about drawing as a means of communication. Pam is a member of the Chartered Society of Designers and holds Professional Membership of the Higher Education Academy FHEA.

Entry-level

If you are a junior designer or brand new to exhibition design, then this book may be helpful, but I was expecting a little more substance. If you have more experience, then this is not the book for you. Some other books in the "basics" series have taken a bit of a deeper dive, but this one is definitely basic.

I gave it 3 stars because it's not a bad book, it just didn't meet my needs. This is a decent intro to the practice, but I don't recommend if you are not a beginner.

Students perspective

The book itself, is visually pleasing. It's use of colour and layout meant that it was easy to navigate through the book, not being bored by endless amounts of text. The book communicates a better understanding of the complexity in exhibition design. It explains thoroughly the different aspects of exhibition design, and the way it affects the world, and how dependant on the size and importance of the exhibition it can be used for commercial and even cultural purposes.

Reading through the book there were many examples of exhibitions or expo's, however it most cases it would only simply mention the name of the exhibition, and re frame from going into further detail. It would of also been beneficial to include more diagrams, of previous exhibitions, precedent that's already available, with various sections and plans including the scale on each drawing.

Instead of this book providing students like me with detailed precedents, of various exhibitions it simply explains all of the components of this form of design. Breaking it down and explaining the individual features and what have an effect on the overall design of an exhibition space. Which is very good for people who are trying to grasp the concept of expo design, as it explores the fundamental topics with clear diagrams and includes various examples of work from both students and professionals work.

Overall its a good buy for students, it's the first platform I would use to help in understanding and comprehending the theoretical designing of exhibitions.

Marc Delisle was awarded "MySQL Community Member of the year 2009" because of his involvement with phpMyAdmin. He started to contribute to the project in December 1998, when he made the multi-language version. He is still involved with phpMyAdmin as a developer and project administrator.

Marc is a system administrator at Cegep de Sherbrooke, Qu�bec, Canada. He has been teaching networking, security, and web application development. In one of his classes, he was pleased to meet a phpMyAdmin user from Argentina. Marc lives in Sherbrooke with his wife and they enjoy spending time with their four children.

This book is a good starter book on PHP

This book is a good starter book on PHP, but wastes a lot of space telling you how to install php, which is already done for you on most shared hosts. It will not help you do every task, but it provides a great starting point.

Superb Introduction to Therapeutics Development

Medicinal Chemistry is an elegantly structured introduction to the topic. It blends the theory, practice and examples in an exceptionally well flowing presentation.

The first three chapters present the overall history and discovery process in therapeutics.

Then in Chapters 4-5 there is a discussion of enzymes and targets. There are many examples presented and analytical tools presented.

Chapters 6 through 9 discuss items related to the process. Finally Chapters 10 through 12 provide a simple but complete description about the Lead process of drug development. Chapters 11 and 12 provide a great balance of classic Lead development and some contemporary methods.

I would strongly recommend this for Medical students who are looking at Oncology or even Internal Medicine. It goes beyond the introduction to pharmacological materials generally presented to the Med Student and opens the windows on the world of pharmacological development.

This is a wonderful text. Unlike many research oriented books it presents a balanced analysis of all the materials and it does so in an uncluttered manner. It does no talk down to the reader nor does it isolate the reader with overly advanced jargon. The book is exceptionally well laid out and the material is uncluttered, unlike so many other texts that seem to want to include every possible image in a plethora of unreadable colors.

The only weakness in the books is the lack of a chapter on the development of many of the newer cancer therapeutics; those which are pathway modulators such as imatinib and those which are immunomodulators. Although this would have expanded the text, the importance of these new therapeutics really demands some discussion, perhaps in a second edition. To be fair, the author does briefly discuss imatinib on pp 80-81 but this is brief and does not address the pathway issues.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand more on the pharmacological development area.

This study guide is really good at providing different strategies that may be used for successful completion of the BOC exam. It also offers Around 700 multiple choice questions covering all the different domains of athletic training, as well as incorporating a cd that has about another 1000 questions including the different types of testlet questions. The only problem that I had, and that some other people have had, is that when scoring some of the questions, the scoring may not be accurate.

The CD ROM the book came with was extremely helpful, you are able to do numerous multiple choice questions by domain, and over 100 focused testlets. Helped me pass my exam. If you need a review book for the BOC exam, this is the one you should buy!

About the Author
As an archaeology student in the 1980s, Graeme Davis visited Viking sites in England and Denmark and worked on post-excavation analysis of materials from two Viking farms in the Orkney Islands. He is the author of the tabletop roleplaying sourcebook GURPS Vikings and several Viking-related magazine articles, among many other titles. He currently lives in northern Virginia with his wife Jamie, who is also a writer. The author lives in Front Royal, VA.

Fifty shades of Thor

No. This isn’t Thornography. It’s simply a reference to the multiple facets the god of Thunder has which the author presents with elegance.

Both the author and the illustrator are well known figures from the gaming world. Graeme Davis wrote one of the best GURPS supplements ever – GURPS Vikings; Miguel Coimbra is an extremely talented artist ever present in the gaming industry (both RPG’s and board games).

This team created a fine work which shows the multiple aspects of Thor, the hero, the god, the folklore character, the national hero and even the super-hero.

It analyses summarily with competence the sources for the Thor legends, including both the poetic and prose Edda, but also less known works such as Thorsdrapa.

The main legends are “chronologically” arranged so that the reader can experience Thor’s adventures in logical sequences and include his most famous achievements such as how Thor got Mjolnir, the illusions at Utgardaloki, Aegir’s feast (and all related adventures such as the fishing of Jormungand, the cauldron of Hymir and the Flyting of Loki against all the gods), the duel against the biggest of giants – Hrungnir, Thor as a “bride” of Thrym, the assassination attempt by Geirrod, the Flyting between Harbard and Thor and the final battle at Ragnarok. There is also a resume of other legends where Thor made an appearance.

The chapter Thor the god shows some rituals associated with Norse religion, sources for the temples and priesthood (although there wasn’t possibly “professional clergy”, there are clear references to priests who were local community leaders). The relations with Christianity and the progressive transformation of the god into a hero and folklore. The resurgence of Thor through the Romantic ideals of the 19th century and the nationalistic movements of the 20th century and finally to the well-loved comic book character (and also the silver screen hero).

The color plates by Miguel Coimbra include: Thor wrestling the old woman Elli in the hall of Utgardaloki; Thor battling Jormungand while fishing with Hyrm; the quite comical grumpy Thor disguising himself as bride to the giant Thrym; Harbard (probably Odin) and Thor's famous Flyting contest (in this plate the contestants should be far apart); The last fight between the Midgard serpent and Thor; In the hall of Aegir Thor threatens Loki after the latter offends all guests; and a magnificent double page plate where Thor battles three huge giants.

In this very good introduction to Thor you will also find a glossary, bibliography and internet resources where interested readers can analyze the sources in Old Norse and an English translation.

Nothing new to learn here

Good book focused on Thor and his beginnings anf mythology. Nice pictures and stories, but does not take account of his recent resurgence; mentions the latest movies, but stops at Marvel comic and movies. Nothing about neo-Aegardian interests and understandably light on historical religious practices. Nothing new to learn here, worthy of Wargames Research and Osprey fluff.

*I received this Ebook from Netgalley for my honest opinion.*

I really enjoyed this book primarily about Thor. It's written mainly as a informational, historical book about Thor with many cross overs with the other Norse gods. The author included numerous pictures, both modern and historical, to correspond with each story translated and told in straight forward English.

Overall it was an easy read, great for teens and adults to get a basic understanding of Norse mythology and Thor's place within it.

This book seeks to move the discussion toward, and then past, the main decision points so that CoCos can prove their value for contingency planning and self-insurance all over the world. It is intended to increase the ability of issuers and investors to analyze and understand the different kinds of CoCos.

Since entering the doctoral program at Princeton University as an International Finance Fellow, and inspired by Burt Malkiel and Ed Kane, George von Furstenberg has been fascinated with macro and micro aspects of finance. Throughout his career, work at US government agencies such as the President's Council of Economic Advisers (Senior Economist, 1973 76) and the Department of State (1989 90), at the IMF Research Department (Division Chief, 1978 83), and at the National Science Foundation (Rotating Program Director Economics, 2006 08) has alternated with his academic pursuits. A titled Professor of Economics at Indiana University, emeritus as of 2006, he is a member of the Toronto-based G8 Research Group, a past president (2000) of the North American Economics and Finance Association, and a participant in meetings of the Asian Economic Policy Panel. He has been listed in Who's Who in the World since 2006.

Work in his principal fields has been supplemented by continuing analyses of US economic and financial policies in several areas. These include regional trade agreements, housing and mortgage credit, and capital insurance for financial institutions as well as evaluations of US policy responses during the depth of the 2007 2009 financial crisis.

His current work on efficient design of Contingent Convertible Debt Securities (CoCos) and on Contingent Capital as a reform instrument to strengthen the private safety net through self-insurance of financial institutions has benefitted from visiting research fellowships in the Research Centre of the Deutsche Bundesbank (2010), the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research (2011), and the Risk Management Institute of the National University of Singapore (2011)

Excellent book explaining why CoCos can be and should be a relevant financial instrument to alleviate deterioration in a bank’s balance sheet.

This book counter balances economic concepts which are oftentimes far removed from the reality of a bank’s operations and everyday decision-making experience. The pragmatic examples outlined in this book favorably contrast other books like The Bankers' New Clothes by Anat Admati & Martin Hellwig where the authors lay out very few foundations to support the “equity claim.”

Prof. Von Furstenberg central premise is that a simple measure -- banks voluntarily raising capital through CoCos and reshaping their capital structure -- issuing bonds that can be converted to equity -- would greatly improve the stability of the issuing bank, improve corporate governance, enhance market discipline in the banking system, and would greatly reduce bailout costs. Prof. Von Furstenberg slices through the various issues, catalogs and presents a credible and clear view of an instrument still in its infancy. As a result, he addresses a number of CoCos’ issues and features central to developing this product--policies or the lack thereof, tax treatment, rating agencies roles --risk premium, conversion price and replacement rate, recovery rate.

In this challenge, the discussion around going-concern recovery sets the tone for a serious conversation about the need for such product. The simplicity in which the various ratios and calculations are presented makes for a pragmatic and relevant case.
As a pragmatic example, I particularly enjoyed chapter 8 subsection 8.1 around the restructuring of SolarWorld and the theoretical demonstration of the need for such product not only for banks but for corporations. As an experienced restructuring banker, I appreciate the impact of the hypothetical CoCo issued and the estimated cash savings from interest payments, cash being key in such situations.

While no single measure proposal can resolve every problem that might arise in the financial sector, CoCos appear as a necessary threshold that must be addressed.

From a banker’s perspective (having consulted as well for 5 years on the European financial crisis), I found Prof. Von Furstenberg message to be quite persuasive and compelling.

A Valuable Book

For anyone who wants to understand contingent equity, this book is full of valuable insights, useful facts, and careful distinctions. It begins with an encyclopedic treatment of differences in the evolving levels and composition of capital (i.e., equity) requirements in the US and EU. Cocos are described as creative instruments that in Europe authorities have allowed to lower some of the tax and regulatory burdens associated with providing loss-absorbing private equity funding to banks when it is desperately needed.
The use of the word “potent” in his subtitle immediately tells us that Professor von Furstenberg hopes that his book can help overcome the reluctance of US tax and regulatory authorities to follow the Europeans’ lead. He builds a case for cocos as a way to temper the costs of Too-Big-to-Fail policies for taxpayers. In his view, the expected reduction in bailout costs would make it worthwhile to “bend” regulatory definitions of capital and tax-code restrictions on deductibility of interest, at least on instruments that are actuated automatically and set to convert long before the point of potential insolvency. In view of the difficulty of credibly estimating the side effects and after-effects of alternative policies, he does not attempt any quantitative balancing of the opportunity costs involved.
The book has immense value as a reference, which is how I will use it. It catalogues --and shows how to price-- a range of differences in contractual features and explains how particular variations in contract terms might improve corporate governance and enhance market discipline. It reviews real-world use and misuse of cocos at banks that have actually issued them. Finally, the last 90 pages of the book work through a series of major policy issues and offer well-chosen excerpts from key statements on cocos developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and US and European authorities.
