Following the political and military collapse of the tiny Sultanate of Patani in what is now southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, a displaced community of scholars led by Shaykh Dā’ūd bin ‘Abd Allāh al-Faṭānī regrouped in Mecca. In the years that followed, al-Faṭānī composed more than forty works that came to form the basis for a new, text-based type of Islamic practice. Via a network of scholars, students, and scribes, al-Faṭānī’s writings made their way back to Southeast Asia, becoming the core texts of emerging pondok (Islamic schools) throughout the region. Islamic scholars thus came to be the primary power brokers in the construction of a new moral community, setting forth an intellectual wave that spurred cultural identity, literacy, and a religious practice that grew ever more central to daily life.

In Forging Islamic Power and Place, Francis R. Bradley analyzes the important role of this vibrant Patani knowledge network in the formation of Islamic institutions of learning in Southeast Asia. He makes use of an impressive range of sources, including official colonial documents, traveler accounts, missionary writings, and above all a trove of handwritten manuscripts in Malay and Arabic, what remains of one of the most fertile zones of knowledge production anywhere in the Islamic world at the time. Writing against prevailing notions of Southeast Asia as the passive recipient of the Islamic traditions of the Middle East, Bradley shows how a politically marginalized community engineered its own cultural renaissance via the moral virility of the Islamic scholarly tradition and the power of the written word. He highlights how, in an age of rising colonial power, these knowledge producers moved largely unnoticed and unhindered between Southeast Asia and the Middle East carrying out sweeping cultural and religious change. His focus on Thailand’s so-called “deep south,” which has been marginalized in scholarly studies until recent times, helps lay the groundwork for a new generation of scholarship on the region and furthers our understanding of the present-day crisis in southern Thailand.

The study of Islam in Southeast Asia has been most often relegated to the realm of religious studies, and historians have considered the development of the nation as the single-most important historiographical problem in the region. By focusing on the role of human agency and the logistics of knowledge transmission, this book transforms our understanding of the long and complex history of the flow of religious knowledge between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

In these unsettling tales from a neuroscientist every bit as quirky as the more famous Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran sets out his beliefs that no matter how bizarre the case, empirical, strikingly simple testing can illuminate the ways brain circuitry establishes "self." In a chatty, nearly avuncular style, he (along with his coauthor, a New York Times science writer) snatches territory from philosophers on how we think we know what we know. In one experiment, stroking an amputee's cheek produces sensations in his "phantom limb" because the part of the brain's map that once related to the lost limb has "invaded" the adjacent brain area that relates to the cheek. Unafraid to speculate, Ramachandran then moves a step closer toward indicating that the brain is not only a busy lump of genetically deemed-and-dying hard-wiring but an organ that can continuously "re-map" in response to new sensory information from the outside. Equally fascinating are Ramachandran's "mirror tricks" on amputees and paralyzed patients that begin to reveal how much the brain relies on context and comparison as well as on "inside" neural connectivity to form self. Perhaps most disquieting are beginnings of proof that much brain activity, including what we like to think of as uniquely human behavior, happens unbidden. Fascinating

This author is someone I had heard about for his work on Phantom Limbs. He seems to be getting closer to understanding the mind and how we "work" better than any other researchers out there. He has a curious mind and thank God for the environment Salk/ UCSD which allows him free reign to explore his curiosity and hunches. This is how science should be investigated.. simply and without massive expensive set ups, yet using innovative ideas to find REAL answers.
I love the style of writing. It is fast paced and never boring, even though it is about medical issues, it still reads like "Sherlock Holmes" wrote it... this is Dr. Ramachandran's nick name. There are case stories in this book that will keep you in cocktail chatter for months. Every page is a little more incredible than the previous one. All is written for the lay reader, without condescension. Highly recommended and just be warned--it is hard to put it down.

Ramachandran and Blakeslee created this delightful book using humor, logic and simple tests to illuminate how the brain works and doesn't work. Readers are even invited to run their own test at home to confirm Rama's (his term) conclusions.

Why does an amputee deny her left arm is missing or her paralyzed arm belongs to her brother?

Such examples offer fertile areas to explore to find what specific brain cells seem related to such behavior.

Could we alter the perception of a missing arm using mirrors? The answer is "yes" and by doing so we learn a little more about our brain's adaptivity.

So what's going on when a person can square a fifteen digit number as fast as he can say the answer?

While these small bites offer small answers, many such bites shed light on big answers.

While I want to learn more about the brain, I suspect whatever book I select will be way too technical so I will just reread PITB again.

It's that good.

Really Stimulates Your Little Gray Cells

Like Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran tells of some startling neurological insights he's gained by examining unusual cases. These pages contain summary case histories of individuals who can't recognize faces - of individuals who deny that various body parts belong to them - of individuals who experience vivid hallucinations.

Many of Ramachandran's breakthrough theories though are based on his treatment of individuals who suffered from phantom pain after an amputation. In the course of probing this puzzling phenomenon, Ramachandran hit upon some ideas that have far-reaching implications. Studying this phenomenon allowed him to advance new theories about the way stimuli are received and mapped in the brain.

When a leg is amputated, the area of the brain that would normally register sense impressions from it is left without any incoming stimuli. That part of the brain sits expectant and hungry for some incoming messages. Neural connections in adjacent areas of the brain then sometimes expand, filling in the information vacuum. Those adjacent areas are ordinarily dedicated to registering sensation from unrelated parts of the body, such as the face. So when anyone touches the amputee's face, that sensation might be amplified and experienced as severe pain in a leg that is no longer there.

Ramachandran believes that this tendency of the brain to adapt and "fill-in" might be at the root of many neural dysfunctions. When a person loses his sight in a part of his visual field, surrounding neurons might elaborate and reach in to fill the void. When a person loses some aspect of neuronal processing that has to do with body image, other neurons from areas of adjacent functioning might reach in to offer sensation input. The borrowed processing mechanism doesn't always fit its functioning into a "normal," coherent sense of the world though. The result can be strange distortions of perception.

These ideas might explain all sorts of human folly - such as fetishes. Specifically, Ramachandran suggests that foot fetishes might arise because the sensation processing areas devoted to the feet and to the genitals typically lie adjacent to each other in the brain. Similarly, various kinds of body dysmorphic disorders, such as anorexia, might be traced to such take-overs.

This book was written in 1998. Ramachandran suggested many experiments that could be made to test his theories. I wonder how many have been done in the interim? I'm eager to check out any of his more recent writings to get updates on some of these questions.

He writes in an accessible style. What's more, he suggests a number of very simple, non-invasive techniques that people might experiment with to relieve themselves or family members of dangerous delusions. For example, he suggests spritzing cold water into the left ear of anorexics; he suggests using mirrors to help "neglect" patients recover an awareness of both sides of their body and of their environment.

The 35 pages of small-print footnotes at the end of the book might appear to be a chore that you'd be inclined to skip. But they serve as a good summary of the main text, and also contain many fascinating suggestions for further experiments that could either confirm or disprove the important ideas in this book.

Overall, this book is a real brain-teaser.

About the Author
H. Wallace Goddard, Ph. D., is a Professor and Family Life Specialist with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. He has created numerous family programs and a PBS television series. His previous books include The Soft-Spoken Parent, The Frightful and Joyous Journey of Family Life, and My Heart Delighteth in the Scriptures: Personal and Family Applications as well as a revision of the classic Between Parent and Child. Wally has written for Meridian Magazine since 1999 the first year it was introduced online. His acquaintance with Scot and Maurine Proctor who publish the magazine was one of those chance meetings that was meant to be. He ended up sitting by Maurine at the World Family Policy Forum and they began talking. The subject of Meridian Magazine came up and Wally told her about his passion for writing about some of the very subjects Meridian most wanted to cover. Because of that one serendipitous meeting Wally became one of Meridian s most prolific, most insightful, and most loved columnists. Wally has served in the Church as a bishop, institute teacher, and high councilor. He and his wife Nancy have three adult children and a growing number of amazing grandchildren. Over the years they have cared for twenty foster children.

Probably good for newlyweds

I feel weird being the only one not singing the praises of this book. I've read a lot of books on human relationships and I have to say that I don't care for this book. I think I was expecting more of a self-help style book. It reads more like a blog than a book and is much more anecdotal than practical. Maybe this would be good as a starter marriage book. Like the first one you read to prepare your heart and build a gospel foundation. I could see it being good for that. If you've read a lot of books on the subject, this book probably won't be anything new. That's why i'm giving it 3 stars. Not terrible but not great.

This book is geared towards Latter-day Saints so for church members looking for inspiration or a change of heart, I'd recommend reading talks from church leaders themselves (The Perfect Example by Eyring or Beware of Pride by Benson come to mind). For those wanting more self-help or practical advice on improving your relationship, try John Gottman's book "The 7 Principles for making marriage work". He includes lots of activities and practical advice on changing your attitude as well as building closeness.

Marriage is a not just a two-way commitment, but it is a three-way covenant between man, woman, and God. As we apply the powerful principles discussed in the book, we will achieve eternally rewarding results. At the end of each chapter, Goddard provides questions to consider as we evaluate our own thoughts, feelings, and actions.

This is a must have book for every couple. Whether your marriage is on the brink of disaster or if your marriage is smooth sailing, Wally Goddard provides ample advice, empirical data, and solutions to build and sustain a lasting covenant centered marriage. This is simply the absolute best book on marriage that I have ever read!

I've been searching for a book on marriage that would give me wisdom and a cure to bring a troubled marriage back to it beginning state and esentualy give it a new start with focus to make it a satisfying marriage and avoid the pitfalls that gave it trouble from the beginning. This book does just that and more. The whole marriage is now based on living the principles of Jesus Christ and keeping all God's commandments and being obedient at keeping all the vows and covenants made at the Altar. Both Husband and Wife choose to love and care for each other and cleave unto each other with unconditional love and use repentance and charity to overlook all iritations that arrise due to their differences. This is the only way on earth that a troubled marriage relationship can be permentally changed to the better.

When Pittsburgh steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie opened the Carnegie Institute in 1895, he hoped that his friend O.C. Marsh would provide a dinosaur for his new museum. However, Marsh died in 1898, leaving Carnegie without a dinosaur. Then the New York Post published a story about a colossal sauropod skeleton found in Wyoming by a man named Bill Reed. Carnegie was determined to get the fossil for his museum, but the University of Wyoming was just as determined. Carnegie's fortune eventually won the prize. When the dinosaur was excavated, it was named Diplodocus carnegii in his honor, and casts of the fossil were displayed around the world. Journalist Rea researched the tale of the Diplodocus fossil from original correspondence. Knowledgeably written by former journalist Tom Rea, Bone Wars: The Excavation And Celebrity Of Andrew Carnegie's Dinosaurs is the award- winning true story of how a Diplodicus carngeii fossil (named after famous industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie) found in the Wyoming badlands helped bring about public fascination with the great beasts of millennia past. Though Bone Wars is entirely nonfiction, it is so deftly written that it reads like a novel as it follows the battles of individuals, conflicting scientific theories, and even instances of backstabbing and double-crossing in the bone-hunting world of a century past. An extensive bibliography and index enhance this truly enjoyable and informative history, which is especially recommended for dinosaur and paleontology enthusiasts.

With his big bushy moustache and sun-weathered skin,
Tom Rea looks like one of the tough paleontologists staring
out of one of the black-and-white photographs in his book,
Bone Wars: The Excavation and Celebrity of Andrew Carnegie's
Dinosaur. His voice, though, has the soft polite tone of a
professional who has worked indoors for the better part of his
life. Imagining Rea to be like one of the men he wrote about is
probably a tribute to how vividly he portrays the people who
made Carnegie's dinosaur such a sensation. Rea is quick to
cite the abundance of letters he used as primary source material.
"The whole story is filled with interesting characters," says Rea.
"The personalities are so strong in those letters. I don't know if
it's the line of work that draws strong-minded people to it --
they certainly weren't in it for the money -- but in any case they
didn't want other people to get in the way of finding out what
the bones could tell them. Sometimes they disagreed quite strongly."
Rea comes from a family that knows geology and paleontology
-- his uncle is a geologist; his brother is a geologist at the
University of Michigan; geology was also his mother's avocation
-- but he came to write his book by following a less scientific
path. He grew up in Pittsburgh looking at Carnegie's dinosaur
at the Carnegie Museum. After graduating from Williams
College in Massachusetts in the early 1970s, Rea spent a few
summers visiting his uncle's ranch. He became a reporter for
the Wyoming's Casper Star-Tribune for the next 13 years,
though he maintained an amateur interest in geology and
paleontology. In 1990, he started working on an article
for the paper about, how Carnegie's famous dinosaur
made its way from Wyoming to Pittsburgh.
During his research, he became fascinated with the fossil digs
and disputes that surrounded the unearthing of the bones.
When he quit the paper in 1998, he wanted to write a
book about a number of these controversies,
but an editor suggested he focus on just one. Then, in 1999,
he came to the Carnegie Museum.
"Not until I got here did I realize how many letters they were,"
says Rea. "They had archives there that yielded all the
resources to write the book I wanted to write."
Correspondence between Carnegie and then-museum director
William Holland, who Rea says figures as "the Darth Vader of
the story," was right next door at the Carnegie Library. Rea
ended up using the archives of a number of Pittsburgh groups.
"[Holland's] secretary typed and saved every letter, even put
them in chronological order, so it was very easy to follow,"
Rea says.
The first person who caught Rea's attention was Bill Reed, the
tough, autodidactic Wyomingite who found Carnegie's dinosaur.
"He was a frontiersman who was dealing with people from the
East who didn't particularly respect him because he was a
Westerner," Rea says. "It was a different time back then. A guy
like Reed who'd been a buffalo hunter and snow shoveler on
the railroad was one acquaintance away from the richest man in
the world. Although the men were divided profoundly by class
and opportunity, they were still all connected."
The story of Carnegie's dinosaur was "a natural for a book,"
and Rea easily sold the idea to the University of Pittsburgh
Press, then wrote it in a year and a half. This is Rea's first
published book, though perhaps not his last. Now he is
considering writing book about Earl Douglas,
the paleontologist who found the Jurassic quarry
of dinosaur bones that is now the Dinosaur National Monument
in Utah and Colorado.

The author did an excellent job of researching 'who done what and when'

Not much intrigue in this book. The author did an excellent job of researching 'who done what and when', but the story lacked excitement. I was counting pages to read about midway. Someone who is really into the history of dinosaur bone hunting a century or so ago would probably get a lot out of this book, I did not. One thumb up.
