Tired of RPG/400, JCL and the like? Here's a ticket out

If you're seeking a book that will prepare you for a career as a web developer, this isn't what you're looking for. It's neither a programming tutorial nor a book on specific environments, such as .NET. However, if you're doing maintenance programming in, say, RPG/400 or writing JCL and are wondering how you can refactor your skills and get out of the mid-range and mainframe environment this book is ideal.
Solid programming skills are assumed (preferably in C or C++, but that isn't essential). You should have a basic understanding of databases and data structures. If you have these skills this book will systematically familiarize you with the web programming environment and common tools and programming languages that you'll need to master in order to transition out of the data center. I like the way the book touches all of the key knowledge areas, starting with HTML and going through javascript, perl and the usual cast of mark-up, scripting and programming languages. More importantly, this book doesn't skim the surface - it does into databases, XML and server-side development. If you've read the table of contents and are tempted to question why CGI was included in such a relatively new book, bear in mind that most of the information in this book is ideal for maintenance programmers, and there are literally thousands of systems that still employ CGI scripts. This also reinforces my opinion about who will benefit most from this book - maintenance programmers from mid-range and mainframe environments.
In a nutshell, you bring your knowledge of algorithms, data structures and development methodologies, and the book will show you how to apply them to web programming.

Root headed out to teach with no compromise, but following a standard of completeness and clarity.

In another review about a book by the same author, I remarked that reading his books is like chewing sawdust. This basic fact has not changed. However, I now maintain that Bill Root has written the best books on learning the game in all its aspects.

This book is not about plain point ranges as another reader has already claimed; the book is logical, methodical, clear, but there is a catch: this is to be read like a text book; I have taken notes, underlined, and made crib sheets out of it. If you slow down enough your reading speed and do not read it casually like a novel, you will be amptly rewarded.

An example of the terseness of this book is that the headings in this book need to be read and fully understood before reading the respective sections; most of us tend to skip the headings, don't we?

Before I have used this terseness as a con in Root's books, but I have come to realise that this is the best possible format: no distractions, just pure essence.

I am tired of these books that are full of anectodes, pretend to ease you into the point they are trying to make, and then ... KABOOM, here is the point as dry as ever.

Root's books have the guts to be pure bridge, no filler, no gimmicks, JUST EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WITH NO HOLDING BACK OR TRYING TO SPREAD THE INFORMATION OVER SEVERAL BOOKS.

Root headed out to teach with no compromise, but following a standard of completeness and clarity.

It took me quite a time to realise his sense of integrity and charisma, but I did. I am sure that any absolute beginner will initially resist buying his books, but he or she will inexorably gravitate to them and appreciate their wealth of information.

It is this wealth that will make you go through them slowly; the other authors have spoiled you and have put the emphasis on easy reading.

A page by Root is worth easily 20 by the other authors.

Found an answer for every question I had about Lymphoedema

The book is an invaluable resource if one wants to know more about lymphoedema (localized fluid retention and tissue swelling), its possible causes, types, risk factors for the development and ways to minimize the risk of lymphoedema. There are plenty of useful information on the effect of lymphoedema on the skin and dealing with skin problems. A lot of attention is given to treatments for lymphoedema as a combination of manual compression lymphatic massage, compression garments (types of garments) and bandaging. Also, I found plenty of information about exercises, lymph drainage massage and additional treatments used in the management of lymphoedema.
Additionally, I have to admit that there are plenty of real life case scenarios, great references and websites for further reading. The book is well written and organized. Thank you

Missing too much

The novel is my favorite of all the Percy Jackson stories, so I was very excited to see a graphic version. But the bottom line is that way too much from the text is missing, poorly represented, or changed for the worse. So many wonderful scenes are not present in this version, moments that bring the fantasy world of the Greek and Roman Demi gods to life. Also, sadly, most of the humor is missing as well.

Good, but to truly enjoy the hero's of Olympus story you have to read the word for word books because you miss out on the emotions and jokes at certain parts. I recommend using the graphic novels as a way of rereading the series without actually rereading the thousands of pages.

Compelling scenario of the endgame in Cuba

State Department veteran James Bruno combines his insider's view of the complex machinery of the U.S. government with his firsthand experience of Cuba to create this compelling scenario of how the Castro regime may, finally, come to an end.

Bruno's great sense of place, already evident in his earlier thrillers, comes to the fore, taking the reader to the streets of Havana and Santiago and to the bizarre world of the Guantanamo Line, where one of the world's last remaining Communist regimes and an illegal American occupier coexist.

Against this colorful backdrop, Bruno creates a fast-paced plot of the endgame in Cuba, as the corrupt regime of the Castro brothers faces its own group of militant rebels determined to throw them out just they had ousted Batista in the 1950s. An intrepid FBI agent of Cuban heritage, Nick Castillo, is drawn into this drama, making common cause with the rebels even as he falls into an ambiguous relationship with the designated heir of the Castros, Che's (fictional) daughter, Larisa Montilla.

The action includes the inter-agency conflict between the FBI and the CIA embodied in Castillo's own discordant relationship with Kate Kovalchuk, an "ice princess" paired with Castillo to find out just what is going on in Cuba as hardship and government paralysis drive the people to rebel against the failed regime.

Bruno has a healthy respect for the tenacity of a corrupt regime to cling to power. He also depicts how foolish it would be to underestimate the extent to which Cuban intelligence has infiltrated our own government with all-too-real vignettes of traitors at work. Just because the Castros are incompetent in running a country doesn't mean they aren't masters of espionage and sabotage.

In fact, in a final act of defiance, the dying regime in Cuba is ready to strike at the very heart of its giant nemesis to the north by setting in motion a plan to assassinate the president of the United States even as all is lost.

This is the dramatic denouement as rebel forces appear to win the day in Havana and Santiago, forcing Nick and Kate to return to the States in a last-ditch effort to foil this final plot.

Ready for the sequel!

OK, Bruno, where's the sequel? Nick Castillo is the new hero in town. What's he going to do next?

This book takes you spiritually out of your environment and places you in a spot so foreign and distinctive that you are compelled to enjoy yourself; the mark of a great writer. He's very imaginative when it comes to character development. There is just enough detail about the good guys and the bad guys. He has the right formula to make the reader imagine the rest, rather than overfeed his imagination. The story is innovative and timely. The book is technically perfect.

James Bruno, more than any other person I know has the credentials to talk about today's and tomorrow's Cuba. And he does, in a masterfully written thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can imagine how he pulled teeth at State to get this story approved for publication. It's so real!

My finger hovered over the fifth star for a long moment. While I suspect his motivation was to prepare us for the sequel, the ending is somewhat short of what I personally expected; but then, I'm not a stranger to Cuban affairs. It may be unfair of me not to fork out that fifth star, but I've decided to admit that my thirst for more may have been the reason.
