A sea of shallow water

C. S. Lewis once remarked of Spenser's vast symbolic and poetic romance that reading a passage from "The Faerie Queene" is like looking at a body of very clear, very deep water: the surface movement in itself is beautiful, hypnotic, fascinating; then you realize that something equally fascinating is going on beneath the surface; then you realize that the water is so deep that you can't be sure whether you will ever see all the way to the bottom. In "The Illustrated Faerie Queene: A Modern Prose Adaptation," Douglas Hill offers an extensive and thorough recounting of the surface narrative of Spenser's poem, much more detailed than Cliff's Notes, for instance, and, in contrast to Mary Macleod's nineteenth-century "Stories from The Faerie Queene," neither merely selective nor bowdlerized for children. He also provides a very basic understanding of the allegory. But Hill's flat prose conveys absolutely nothing of the surface appeal of Spenser's poetic narrative, and his handling of the allegory leaves the impression that it is uniformly insipid and shallow. (He also unaccountably omits The Mutability Cantos altogether.)
The copious illustrations, with their informative captions, are not of scenes FROM "The Faerie Queene," nor usually even of scenes LIKE THOSE in "The Faerie Queene," but predominantly of scenes THEMATICALLY RELATED to "The Faerie Queene." They are valuable for a budding literary historian to have on hand, but not necessarily what most potential purchasers of "The Illustrated Faerie Queene" would be hoping or expecting to find.
