About the Author
Dutch Von Ehrenfried has worked in both the space flight and aviation fields for about 25 years. He was a NASA Flight Controller in Mission Control for Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Missions and also worked on some of the experiments that went into Skylab from an Earth Resources experiment standpoint. He has also worked in the NASA Headquarters Space Station Program Office for about 10 years and the FAA Aviation Safety Office for a year.��

An Indispensable & True Account for Space Historians

Dutch, whom I began working with at NASA in 1962, has written a very well-researched and comprehensive history of how the original Space Task Group and NASA began. He gives a very personal and complete account of the high-level management and technical decisions were made at Langley, the NACA and the Eisenhower Administration by the true pioneers of America's space efforts. In addition, he has written very revealing biographies of those pioneers like Bob Gilruth, Chris Kraft, Max Faget, Chuck Donlan, Chuck Mathews, Paul Purser, etc. Dutch lays out a detailed history of the evolution from early NACA high-speed research and achievements and planning for the International Geophysical Year, as well as the reaction to Sputnik that resulted in the "selling" of NASA to the Congress and the American people! His attention to detail and ability to put it all in human, readable terms is quite remarkable. Since Dutch was there almost from the very beginning, his "insider" stories and "personalization" of the major (and no-so-major) players ring true to me, even though I came in four and a half years after all that. For the true space historian or just a curious neophyte, this book is a must!

The start of NASA's Space Programe

Although expensive for a paper back book Dutch Von Ehrenfried did a very good job of detailing NASA change over from NACA as the Space Program and other advanced Aerospace technologies became important to US. Since I was with NASA at that time, and have a place in the book, there are noted errors, or disagreements. However these are minor considering the overall content.
