In Contempt, by Christopher Darden

#1 New York Times Bestseller. For more than a year, Christopher Darden argued tirelessly for the prosecution, giving voice to the victims in the 0.J. Simpson murder trial. In Contempt is an unflinching look at what the television cameras could not show: behind-the-scenes meetings, the deteriorating relationships between the defense and prosecution teams, the taunting, baiting, and pushing matches between Darden and Simpson, the intimate relationship between Darden and Marcia Clark, and the candid factors behind Darden's controversial decision for Simpson to try on the infamous glove, and much more. Out of the sensational frenzy of "the trial of the century" comes this haunting memoir of duty, justice, and the powerful undertow of American racism. A stunning masterpiece told with brutal honesty and courage.

Review
. . . During the trial Mr. Darden seemed, unlike many on view, as if he might be a decent human being. . . . In Contempt leaves you convinced of this. . . . --The New York Times Book Review, Adam Hochschild

From the Inside Flap
About the Author
Christopher A. Darden has worked for 15 years as a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County, using the same passion he showed at the trial of O.J. Simpson to prosecute racist cops, murderers, drug dealers, and gang members. With every defendant black or white, rich or poor he had one simple goal: justice.

The trial of the century was no different. Challenged by lead defense attorney Johnny Cochran from the moment he took the case, criticized in his own community as an Uncle Tom, Darden stood up and argued before the jury and the country that O.J. Simpson wasn't above the law. "No one is above the law; not the police, not the rich, no one," he said.

An Associate Professor of Law at Southwestern University School of Law, Christopher Darden lives in Los Angeles, California.

Twenty years later, still a fresh perspective; must-read on race relations
By Amazon Customer
When the news came blaring through that O.J. Simpson was the suspect in his ex-wife's recent murder, and all the speculation that came with that was interrupting tv and radio programming, I decided not to pay any attention until all the evidence was in and it was a "settled" case. The next year astounded me. It was impossible to not be aware of the trial, and even though I still made no effort to follow the case, the people involved became household names and many of the facts of the case imprinted upon my mind. Once the verdict was announced I was shocked at the stark divide between the way black people and white people in this country reacted and, as time revealed, thought about things in general. I was busy with life and relieved that it was finally over and just hoped we'd heal, as a nation. I never looked into it as a "settled case."
Then the tv miniseries aired recently and I caught it. I was amazed how familiar it all felt, and very curious about what was accurate and not, so I started looking at books about the trial in Amazon. I liked what the blurb said about Darden's. It's the first book I've ever read on the subject and I found it remarkably fresh and informative. In addition I found it incredibly insightful about race relations and I feel that is helpful today in a way I never expected from a book about a twenty year old trial. Christopher Darden is a passionate and poetic soul, who tells his own story as he weaves the tale of the trial, so that you're getting an autobiographical insight into his fundamental outlook on life, specifically as it relates to justice and to race, and more specifically racial justice. If you're looking for "just the facts" of the case, you probably won't want to wade through all the extra in this book, but if you like a good read, with depth and subtlety and nuance, you'll enjoy this book. You'll get the nitty gritty of the case and the trial, but you'll be treated, in addition, to the deep insights of a fine mind and a truly decent outlook.

"Smokescreen" Defense
By Larry Dietrich
Seems like a large number of us readers and watchers disagreed with the verdict, and even though it was over 20 years ago now, we are still interested in reviewing the facts and evidence once again to see if there is anything we missed. I like the way Mr. Darden laid it all out in an easy to follow style, exposing what I called a "smoke screen defense" the so-called "dream team" put on. And sadly, it worked, confusing the jurors and leading to a shocking "not guilty" verdict.

Worth Reading
By CarolinaBlue23
Intimate, revealing and engrossing. In Contempt is as much about Chris Darden the man as it is about the OJ Simpson trial. in fact, it could almost be categorized as an autobiography that happens to be framed around "Trial of the Century." You really get a sense of the personal anguish Chris went through during the trial. It's maddening when you consider that he was only doing his job. I appreciated leaning about the bond that Marcia and Chris formed during the trial, Darden's struggle with fatherhood and the pressure he felt as a black man during the trial.

I'd only read one book about the trial prior to reading Mr. Darden's. (Daniel Petrocelli's fantastic, Triumph of Justice) I didn't really expect to learn much more from In Contempt but was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting to learn the glaring (and subtle) differences between the criminal and civil trials. I was already convinced of Simpson's guilt but came away even more repulsed by him and his so-called Dream Team.

A crime debut that's perfect for fans of Peter James or Peter Robinson.

If you look him in the eye, you're dead.

From the outside, Robert Naysmith is a successful businessman, handsome and charming. But for years he's been playing a deadly game.

He doesn't choose his victims. Each is selected at random - the first person to make eye contact after he begins 'the game' will not have long to live. Their fate is sealed.

When the body of a young woman is found on Severn Beach, Detective Inspector Harland is assigned the case. It's only when he links it to an unsolved murder in Oxford that the police begin to guess at the awful scale of the crimes.

But how do you find a killer who strikes without motive?

A brilliant debut you don't want to miss
By Vicky @ A Backpack Full of Adventures
Eye Contact, Fergus McNeill's debut novel has been on my wishlist ever since I first saw it on the publisher's website. What intrigued me about this story is the fact that there's no motive behind these murders. It's all just a game. And even before I started reading the book, I started wondering: how do you track down someone who has no reason to kill and whose victims have no connection to each other whatsoever? As a huge crime fan I've read many books from the same genre but never have I encountered one where the killer's only motive is the adrenalin rush, that strive for power and I was quite curious to see what would happen next and how the events would unfold. I had really high hopes for this one and I'm glad to say that McNeill didn't disappoint. McNeill's writing, unique plot and his ability to describe what's going on in both the killer's and his hunter's head are equally engaging from the very beginning and I found it very difficult to put this book down.

I loved the way McNeill dealt with narration. A third person narrator tells the story of both the murderer and the police inspector in a way that the first part of each section tells the killer's side of the events and the second half deals with the investigation process. It's interesting how, even though it's not the killer himself who tells us his side of story, we get to know what goes on in his mind before he decides to strike again and chooses his next victim. While he's a totally ordinary guy with a normal job on the outside, his thoughts are that of a madman. The character I loved the most, however, was the policeman who's working on Naysmith's case - DI Graham Harland. Harland is still trying to come to terms with the loss of his wife and he's quite a lonely, sad and depressed figure. I loved how much he's changed by the end of the story and his relationship with his colleague Mendel and I hope it's not the last we see of the two of them.

When I first saw this book I thought it would be a lot bloodier and more cruel than it actually is which was definitely a pleasant surprise. McNeill doesn't really go into details about the victims and the forensics' work like many thrillers and mysteries do - it rather focuses on how the police are trying to find a motive behind all this and find a link between these murders. Don't get me wrong, it's terrifying all the same. I had nightmares of being followed for two days straight after reading it and I'm not likely to forget this story anytime soon. But if you're looking for the next Hercule Poirot, this one's not for you. There's no snooping around examining the scene of the crime, questioning suspects and witnesses and collecting evidence - that's the point: there are no witnesses and there is no evidence. Naysmith is an incredibly clever and thorough guy whose attacks are carefully planned beforehand. He makes sure that there will be no witnesses and he doesn't leave anything behind, not even a footprint. Which makes this book all the better: you just want to know how the police would find someone who's as guarded as he is or what would be his downfall.

McNeill keeps you in the dark until the very end and you've no idea what's about to happen. Even thirty or forty pages before the end you just don't know if it's ever going to end or if Rob Naysmith is going to get away with it. I loved this book from start to finish and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes suspense and mysteries. Eye Contact will keep you on the edge of your seat all along and keep you guessing till the very end. It's a heart-pounding debut novel you don't want to miss!

Highly Recommended
By Brett H
Debut novels vary a lot. Sadly a few are dire. Others strike the reader as showing promise and start out well, but get lost a little along the way. A very few really hit the mark, and work extremely well on all levels. Pleasingly, Eye Contact was an absorbing read and definitely fell into the latter category much to the credit of the author.

If there is one single mistake which new authors tend to make, it is to overcomplicate plots. The result is often confused, overlong and unbelievable. However, here Fergus McNeill starts out with a simple premise - a serial killer who makes a game of murder. When he decides it is time to kill, he patiently waits for the next occasion on which a stranger makes eye contact with him. At that point they have nominated themselves as his next victim and he hunts them down. Unlikely - certainly. Impossible - by no means. There is no problem whatsoever in buying into this as a credible scenario.

The main protagonists are very capably drawn up and the author really gets under their skin. On the one hand we have the killer, Naysmith. Although predatory, totally ruthless and cold blooded he comes across as a real and rather frightening persona as we learn about both his life and background. In the other corner we have the investigating policeman who is a damaged character - which could be a bit of a clich as it is by no means an unusual scenario in fiction. In this case he has not got over the premature death of his beloved wife who he still deeply grieves. However, again the characterization is done extremely well which makes the reader feel that they understand the man.

Set in the UK, the whole book is evenly paced, and does not lag at any stage. The climax and conclusion are interesting, satisfactory for the reader and somewhat subtle. Here we have an author who clearly understands that less is often more. This is a very impressive debut novel, and I will certainly be looking out for the author's next book. Highly recommended!

Short Description of The Hangman of Abu Ghraib

Abed Ali was born a poor peasant boy who worked on a farm in Iraq. He grew up to become the most deadly assassin and prolific executioner the world has ever known.

This book gives a psychological insight into the mind of a man ordered to kill or be killed himself. The ruthlessness of the Ba'ath Party regime under a dictator. The inhumanity of the American invaders under the promise of 'freedom and democracy'.

It is the true story of one man's life. And the deaths of thousands of others.

One man. Two regimes. The same order from both...

Dear Lover: A Woman's Guide To Men, Sex, And Love's Deepest Bliss, by David Deida

Every woman knows the fairy tale: find the right man, give him what he wants and needs, and he'll love you forever. But when the myth you've been asked to believe fails to deliver—when you sense you've been settling for far less than you know in your heart is possible—how do you attract and keep a man capable of meeting what you most passionately yearn for?

In Dear Lover, David Deida explores every aspect of the feminine practice of spiritual intimacy, from sexuality and lovemaking to family and career to emotions, trust, and commitment. Written as a collection of letters from a man to his dear lover, here is this internationally acclaimed writer's invitation to practice love as a living art, as you discover:

  • Why your man is always your choice—and how to pick the man of deep integrity who will satisfy the needs of your body, heart, and spirit
  • “Sexual essence” and the three stages of loving: how to understand your fluctuating capacity to experience divine connection with another
  • Knowing when to end a relationship and how to deal with the “him-shaped void” your absent man leaves behind
  • Daily exercises to help you and your partner move from separation to openness in two-bodies devotional trust

Ultimately, what every woman wants it to give and receive love fully. Whether you’re partnered or alone, Dear Lover reveals that “your love is the same love that years to open at everybody’s heart. You will attract and inspire a man as willing and able to open as you are. Constant yearning is the call to open and give yourself to all as love’s offering.”

Excerpt

Dear Reader,
I offer the following chapters to you as if you were my lover. Although you may be single or married, I offer these words to you as I would do my beloved. We may never meet, but I want to give you the opportunity to feel your heart through mine.
For years, I have taught workshops around the world, opening with women and men while they share their deepest heart’s desires. It seems we often come to know ourselves most deeply through the heart of someone who loves us, who is willing to open and see us as we truly are, who is willing to listen and feel our heart’s yearning.
To give and receive love fully—this is our heart’s true desire, yours and mine. The yearning you feel in your heart is the same yearning that everyone feels. By feeling your heart’s yearning through nine, I hope you will come to know yourself more deeply through the many hearts that have opened together in trust and allowed these words to emerge.
All hearts want to open to God, or the boundless flow of divine love. You may or may not be a religious person, and still your heart years to open without bounds, to be seen and to be offered without limits. This is what I mean by “open to God”—to open and feel everything and everyone’s heart as a divine expression of love.

I bought it for a friend
By ScottSgr
I bought it for a friend after reading The Way Of The Superior Man, this book's companion. She doesn't believe in God and couldn't get past the mention of a higher power, so I guess atheists don't get to benefit from Mr Deida's wisdom. For everyone else, I think he has the best understanding of the male/female dynamic out there.

My friend's other complaint was that the information was too new and too different from what Dr. Phil and everyone else teaches. She said that if the contents of this book were legit then everyone would already know this. That complaint should be an encouragement for every person out there who thinks Dr. Phil is an idiot and is afraid to buy a relationship book for fear that it will contain the same old warmed-over nonsense.

If nothing else, this book contains NEW information, stuff you haven't heard before, stuff I look forward to trying out on the next open-minded woman I meet.

I won't go into a relationship again with a woman who can't grasp this. I think Dr. Phil works for the divorce lawyer's lobby and David Deida is on our side, and since this book is tragically out of print, you can get it cheap and take a chance on finding that one in a million relationship.

Beautifully written but in my opinion highly unrealistic

Beautifully written but in my opinion highly unrealistic.
I love David's work and so I was surprised by the lack of instruction accompanying this work. This book seems to be written as a taste of what women could, or even should expect from a 'real man' without bridging the actual gap that exists between the ideal and the real. Knowing the amazing instructional and philosophical work this author is able to produce, I would only recommend this to 'seasoned Deida readers' or in combination with other work (i.e. maybe you don't want to read 'Dear Lover' first. Purchase it together with another of Deida's books and read it after learning his take on relationship)

A Few Gems, a Little Kookiness, a Lot of Redundancy
By Aspen Leaf
A central question in David Deida's work is: What is sexual love between a man and a woman for? The answer he gives here and elsewhere is that the purpose of sex is to open our bodies and hearts to God, and in fact that sex more than anything else in life is what takes us open to God. "Through entering your heart and body with mine in love's deepest bliss, I open together with you to God."

Deida's distinctive writing style is intuitive and filled with redundancy, so you'll read that message often in this book (which is written as a series of letters from Deida to the reader as his female lover). To me it's attention-getting the first few times he says it but soon becomes mind-numbing. By the end of the book it's enough already!

Still, this book contains some interesting corollaries for women to contemplate. Among them:

* "The secret to unfolding your heart's deepest bliss is to give and receive love fully, with or without a man. . . . You can learn to open your body as if it were a big heart, vulnerable and full of love's radiant life-force. And it is this disposition of openhearted radiance that will gift the world as well as attract and keep a man capable of actually meeting your heart's deepest desire."

* "Whether you are alone or in relationship, your spiritual and sexual bliss require a daily allotment of whole-body pleasure and deep-heart offering, or else your joy will shrivel like an unwatered plant."

* "Deep heart yearning is not a problem to be solved but a divine pull to open as devotional surrender, as wide as all, now. . . . This capacity to offer your open love is indestructible. No amount of rejection or betrayal can destroy this offering of love."

* "Even when you are tense or upset, you can practice surrendering your body and heart to be breathed open by this love that yearns in everybody's heart."

* "Your yearning attracts and inspires love. If you allow your deepest yearning to show through your entire body, you will attract and inspire a deep man."

* You will attract your reciprocal. "Unsurrendered women attract unpresent men."

* "Your secret sexual desire is to be ravished, lovingly forced open in unbearable pleasure, and taken fully open to God by a man of deep spiritual wisdom, strength, humor, sensitivity, and integrity."

* "Few men are capable of entering a woman's heart and opening her body to God's bliss, but few women are capable of offering their heart and body to be claimed open in this way."

* "Men are terrified of a woman's depth of love and the energy that moves as a woman's sexuality and emotions. And, at the same time, men want nothing more in this life than to merge completely with a woman's devotional love and wild energy. Only as a man outgrows his fear can he handle a woman's tremendous love-energy without running. And only such a man is worthy of your devotional offering in a committed intimacy."

* " . . . you settle for a mediocre relationship because you are afraid to be alone. You fill your heart's yearning with an adequate, but not entirely trustable, man. As you grow beyond being dependent on a man, you may choose to settle for an independent life because you are afraid to rely on a man's support."

* "Eventually, you realize that self-sufficiency is a transition phase. . . . Instead of denying your own needs or limiting your love to self-reliant independence, you realize that, more than anything else, you actually yearn to live open as a devotional offering of love."

* "Your concern for career and self-sufficiency is obviously healthy, but your deepest fulfillment may await risking your heart wide open, offering your bright love to all beings, and giving yourself to be claimed - by a man of integrity, by a family of beloveds, by a world that needs your love. Love is the only way to live that won't leave your feminine heart feeling unseen, ungiven, empty, and wanting--no matter how successful your professional life may be."

* "You want him to notice - in fact, worship - your body's radiant beauty and your heart's light of divine love and he wants you to acknowledge and worship his heart's capacity to spiritually and sexually ravish you open to God."

* "If you want to inspire your man's depth of presence and commitment, offer him your feminine heart's deepest yearning, sexually, actively, and devotionally, receiving him into you completely and responding with full pleasure and trust."

* "Men are like trains. They are going somewhere. Choosing and staying with a man is like choosing to get on a train. You will end up going where your man goes, spiritually and sexually, or you will have to get off his train. You cannot change a man's direction to yours without losing trust in his capacity to navigate."

* "A young rigid woman, closed down and energetically dead, is far less sexy than an older woman who offers her heart-open pleasure in surges of abandoned moans and undulating sensuality, whose devotional eyes and mouth and vagina and legs move and open as unquenchable yearning, whose trust is total, who gives her man her deepest heart and every ounce of her own pleasure as a gift for him to feel, worship, and behold--such a woman is agelessly sexy. She is grounded in her heart and generous with love's offering."

* "Besides your heart's pleasure, your heart's pain is also a gift, if given through an open body and heart. . . . But there is a big difference between accumulating your emotions--eventually expressing them in a toxic dump of tense build-up--and being able to spontaneously express every nuance of emotion as the flow opens through you. Spontaneous emotional expression, from your deep heart through your open body and relaxed breath with no closure or tension, is a natural expression of love--even if love is expressed as sorrow, anger, or fear. . . . With practice, you can learn to offer your pleasure, pain, and emotions spontaneously and responsively as soon as they occur, letting go of them instantly, always with your heart open and connecting with your lover's heart."

* "Men constantly crave feminine energy, especially in safe forms that don't demand depth."

* "Men tend to leave relationships too soon, always looking for a better option. Women tend to stay in relationships too long, always hoping that their man will change and grow."

Now for the kookiness. The following little nuggets just seem way, way off base to me.

"Clitoral orgasms are the most superficial orgasms, requiring little if any emotional or spiritual trust--a vibrator can be used to achieve this pleasure. Nevertheless, clitoral orgasms can prepare you for surrendering more deeply." OK, so he's telling us that some kinds of orgasms are more evolved than others. Let's see, didn't we finally get permission some decades ago to jettison the myth of the vaginal orgasm?

The chapter entitled "Choosing Abuse and Refusing Love" is simply bizarre. There Deida asserts that if you choose to wait for a good man, taking care of yourself while your career progresses, your friends grow, and your life improves, you a choosing to be a victim of abuse. Huh? "The mistreatment is not from a man, but from yourself. You are actively closing, protecting your heart from love, shutting down so your body and heart don't ache so openly. You may be damaging yourself as much as any man could damage you. . . . You've grown used to some suffering, and you truly love your well appointed home, your friends, your cat, your garden. . . . you are choosing to play the victim to less love than you know, deep down, you deserve." Oh puhlease!!!

The chapter entitled "On Showing Your Heart's Light in Public" contains this interesting characterization of Deida's own gender: "When your heart is fully claimed by divine love, you have no personal neediness to be seen. Your body is open and flowing, alive with sexual energy, radiant with delight, and resplendent with the shine of love--you don't want to desecrate love's fullness in the oinking barrage of men's psychic grabbing and groping."

A final note. Deida's original contribution to relationship theory is his idea that in our time men and women are working out what it means to be in a stage 3 relationship, with stage 1 being the role-bound relationships of earlier generations, stage 2 being the egalitarian ideal that emerged with the modern women's movement, and stage 3 being based on the understanding that cultivating the male and female polarities in relationship is what keeps sex passionate and bonding. The idea is appealing, but what bothers me in Deida is a subtle flavoring of male dominance, since it's always about "your man's claim," "your man's taking you open to God." Contrast this with the female-pleasure-based paradigm put forth by Regina Thomashauer in *Mama Gena's Owner's and Operator's Guide to Men* and you'll see what I mean. Both Deida and Mama Gena agree that feminine energy is the most attractive force on earth, but I find Mama Gena's ideas more revolutionary.

When hurt and disappointment about Eddie's inability to commit leads Thomas onto a dark path that spells destruction for all those he loves, only Eddie can pull him back from the brink of eternal darkness. Much More Than Expected
By Kindle Para Review Blog
As a woman, M/M romance has never been my forte. I won't say that this is the first time I have read it, because occasionally it does come up in series that I follow and as an avid reader of the Scanguard Vampire series, there was no way I was passing up this book. I have been rooting for Thomas to have his HEA since we first met him in the first book. So, needless to say, I was anxiously awaiting this latest installment of Tina Folsoms work. This book exceeds every expectation I had for it.

The romance between Thomas and Eddie is fierce, raw and brilliantly written. The connection between these two characters was so well written that I found it some of the hottest erotica that I've read in quite a while. As someone who has always been a fan of M/F love stories, it is actually difficult for me to admit how much I truly enjoyed the journey that Thomas and Eddie has to traverse to find their happily ever after.

Honestly, the only bad aspect of this story is that it ended. This is a story that every Scanguard Vampire Series fan needs to add to their collection. Don't worry, even if you're not into M/M romance and are hesitant to pick this up, don't be. Because of how brilliantly it is written, you don't spend the whole time thinking this is just M/M, you think this is two people who love each other. As the title says, it was much more than I expected.

Kudos!

Well done, Ms. Folsom! As expected, another wonderful entry in the Scanguards Vampires series. As a fan from the beginning, I'd always hoped for a HEA for Thomas. I ,however, feared that Thomas's story would suffer the same "fade to black" syndrome so many authors suffer from when writing their first M/M romance. Or worse, she would make a gay character suddenly discover he was really straight after all. I should have known better... Ms. Folsom stayed true to her characters and her style by keeping Thomas as he always has been and giving us the same sizzling sex scenes as she has with the other vampires in the series.

***SPOILERS***
The Eddie /Thomas romance played out almost exactly as I had wanted. Eddie, while discovering more than friendly feelings and a powerful physical attraction, denies that he could possibly be having those feelings at all. A great deal of angst and hurt follows due to Eddie's confusion, but in the end he comes to his senses with a very satisfying HEA for 2 of our favorite Scanguards bachelors.

We get to know Thomas a bit better through flashback type scenes, so we have a little more insight to both Thomas and the secret he's kept. Thomas has more than his playroom hidden away.

One of our formerly featured couples (know this a spoiler, but I'm not going as far as naming names ) finally has a long awaited and totally unexpected addition to their family , thanks to another beloved character's selfless thinking during a tragedy. Sewing up some loose ends and unsatisfactory features of other books in the series, another of our favorite couples decide on a more permanent relationship and the treatment of Oliver and the poor attitude his friends had toward him in his book is acknowledged. As a final almost spoiler, there are some moments that were definitely darker than you might expect if you have read the previous books in the series (both including well described violence toward pregnant women and their infants) , however, they are brief and in no way gratuitous. I do, however, feel they merit mention. They can be skipped without an impact on the story. Knowing said violence occurred is enough.

There is more mention of events and characters from previous books in the series than in the other books, so while this book can certainly be read as a stand-alone, a read through of previous books could be helpful in understanding the identity and motivations of certain characters who make an appearance.

Overall, this was a perfect addition to the Scanguards Vampires series. Ms. Folsom didn't shy away from details in the sex scenes as so many authors do when adding M/M couples to their M/F series, nor did she dismiss the emotional turmoil caused by one of the men being in denial and then wishing to stay closeted, despite being in a relationship. This couple was given the same attention to detail as all the other Scanguards couples. Well done!

If you enjoyed the other Scanguards Vampires, you'll enjoy this one, too.

Interesting Read!!
By Amazon Customer
Ok, so how to review this book? Let's see what I can come up with here. First I want to start by saying that I love Tina Folsom and I love the Scanguards series. I was very weary when this book came out because it is m/m as this is Thomas and Eddie's story. I may be okay with people being gay but that doesn't mean that I am going to watch gay porn either... So I really struggled with wanting to buy this book. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, there is A LOT of m/m action in this book that is very detailed. It is not glossed over and well if you were to skim over it you would miss about 65% of the book.

So, if you can get past all that the book is amazing! As I stated this is Thomas and Eddie's story and it is a powerful one. Both Thomas and Eddie come with a passenger car full of luggage, but can they get past that ... oh and the fact that Eddie is "straight" to make things work?

We are visited by a popular villain from a previous book, seems he didn't quite die, like everyone thought! Now he is wreaking havoc and creating hell for Thomas and his friends, not to mention the entire city! This villain draws Thomas to him, but can Thomas fight off the evil within him to make the right choice?

I don't want to give away spoilers, but there are some pretty amazing events for some of our favorite couples from previous books as well. The best one is for Yvette and Haven!! Then again Oliver has a pretty big surprise for everyone as well!

Overall, this book does not disappoint, and I am glad that I got it. I love the series and this book continues the story line rather well. As usual all the characters, plots and themes are well thought out and written. The suspense keeps you flipping pages, hungry to know what happens next! There are so many avenues for this story to go, I can't wait to see where the author takes us next!!

Kurt Vonnegut: The Last Interview: And Other Conversations (The Last Interview Series), by Kurt Vonnegut

One of the great American iconoclasts holds forth on politics, war, books and writers, and his personal life in a series of conversations—including his last published interview.

During his long career Kurt Vonnegut won international praise for his novels, plays, and essays. In this new anthology of conversations with Vonnegut—which collects interviews from throughout his career—we learn much about what drove Vonnegut to write and how he viewed his work at the end.

From Kurt Vonnegut's Last Interview

Is there another book in you, by chance?

No. Look, I’m 84 years old. Writers of fiction have usually done their best work by the time they’re 45. Chess masters are through when they’re 35, and so are baseball players. There are plenty of other people writing. Let them do it.

So what’s the old man’s game, then?

My country is in ruins. So I’m a fish in a poisoned fishbowl. I’m mostly just heartsick about this. There should have been hope. This should have been a great country. But we are despised all over the world now. I was hoping to build a country and add to its literature. That’s why I served in World War II, and that’s why I wrote books.

When someone reads one of your books, what would you like them to take from the experience?

Well, I’d like the guy—or the girl, of course—to put the book down and think, “This is the greatest man who ever lived.”

About the Author
Kurt Vonnegut's black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959 and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He was, as Graham Greene declared, “one of the best living American writers.” Vonnegut died April 11, 2007.

Six interesting but redundant interviews
By TChris
Kurt Vonnegut's last interview was fairly short, not nearly long enough to fill a book. It is joined in this volume with five other interviews that span thirty years. Not surprisingly, this leads to some redundancy; Vonnegut liked to tell the same stories and interviewers tended to ask the same questions (who wouldn't, after all, want to ask Vonnegut about the firebombing of Dresden?). Vonnegut discusses his family in nearly every interview; at least four times we hear that his brother patented the process for making rain with silver iodide. On the other hand, we hear almost nothing about the bulk of his fiction, an omission I found disappointing.

The first interview is actually a compilation of four separate interviews that were cobbled together by Vonnegut himself and published in The Paris Review in 1977. Vonnegut talks about his service in World War II, his imprisonment by the Germans in Dresden, and, in general terms, his writing. My favorite quotation from that interview (responding to critics who considered him "barbarous" because he studied chemistry and anthropology rather than classic literature): "I think it can be tremendously refreshing if a creator of literature has something on his mind other than the history of literature so far."

The second interview was published in The Nation in 1980. It focuses on the firebombing of Dresden (the subject of Slaughterhouse-Five) and on nuclear weapons (featured in Cat's Cradle). Vonnegut's most interesting thought concerns his belief that most people lack enthusiasm for life.

A Playboy interview from 1992 -- the best in the book and the most overtly political -- pairs Vonnegut with Joseph Heller. The discussion is wide ranging and features a fair amount of literary (and non-literary) name dropping. Heller and Vonnegut were both World War II veterans; Vonnegut makes some interesting points about the difference between that war and the bombing in the first Iraq war (including the observation that WWII soldiers hoped they didn't have to kill anyone while modern bomb droppers tend to have no such qualms). Here's Vonnegut on censorship and the First Amendment, a statement I applaud: "your government is not here to keep you from having your feelings hurt."

A 2006 interview from Stop Smiling is notable for Vonnegut's discussion of the artwork he did in collaboration with Joe Petro (he saw it as "protesting the meaninglessness in life"). It also updates his political thinking (suffice it to say that he wasn't optimistic about the direction in which the country was moving). Vonnegut saw the extended family as a solution to the nation's problems, but given the impracticality of the extended family in modern America, he advocated having fun. His most telling statement: "I've said everything I want to say and I'm embarrassed to have lived this long."

A condensation of four interviews between 2000 and 2007 (the last a month before his death) is more of the same, but I was struck by how such a big-hearted man, so in love with people despite his continual disappointment in their actions, was so gloomy about his own existence. In a comment worthy of Mark Twain (with whom he had much in common), Vonnegut said: "As you may know, I'm suing a cigarette company because their product hasn't killed me yet."

The final interview, two months before Vonnegut's 2007 death, appeared in In These Times, for which Vonnegut occasionally wrote. Vonnegut was not well; consequently, the interview is very brief. He discusses religion (Vonnegut was a humanist who came from a family of freethinkers) and politics, including a very funny letter he wrote to Iraq describing the path it should follow on the way to becoming a democracy.

Vonnegut was a national treasure. His fans will surely enjoy these interviews, but those who are looking for insight into his thinking beyond his novels might want to pick up his various books of essays, which capture his worldview in greater depth, including his last, A Man Without a Country.

"I propose that every person out of work be required to submit a book report before he or she gets his or her welfare check."
By Ella
Six interviews with Vonnegut, in chronological order. The last interview is rather quick, at around three pages. The interviews touch on his views of other writers, education, war, politics, religion, and his take on humanity.

The interviews were full of Vonnegut's wit, and very amusing to read. Generally I find author interviews disappointing as their works tend to greatly outshine some random Q&A sessions. Happily, this was not the case here, and instead the interviews read more like little raw bits of Vonnegut. My favorite interview was a Playboy one also with Joseph Heller, in which their conversation covers many topics and drops many names. With a bit of time between the rereadings, I'd say the interviews are indeed rereadable. I found that the interviews deepened my appreciation for Vonnegut, and I'll have to go read some now. As lovely as the interviews were, they tended to be rather repetitive in content and questioning. Questioning on most of his work, besides Slaughterhouse Five, would have been nice.

If you enjoy Vonnegut, you'll enjoy his interviews.

I received an electronic copy from the publisher, Melville House, via NetGalley.

Classic Vonnegut, though you may have heard it before...
By ewomack
Most people know that the curmudgeonly fatalistic Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most popular fiction writers of the 20th century. Many may not know that he also gave unforgettable interviews. Often these interviews borrowed from his essays, speeches and novels, but they nearly always came across with the same voice, cuttingly sardonic yet genuinely concerned about the strange race of beings he found himself thrust into.

Sadly, Vonnegut passed away in 2007. Though he himself may not have added "sadly," as this somewhat morbidly titled collection, "The Last Interview," reveals. It spans some thirty years of time and by the 2007 interviews Vonnegut seems almost bitter about still counting himself amongst the living, saying that he's "embarrassed to have lived this long." Though, as anyone who has heard enough of his speeches and interviews knows, he never seemed to mind delving right into macabre topics such as suicide, death and the fate of the human race. As such, this collection ends on a rather sad note.

The first interview dates back to 1977 and reads almost like something out of "Welcome to the Monkey House." By the end we discover a surprise interviewer who reveals himself "Breakfast of Champions" style. This interview covers a lot of usual Vonnegut ground: World War II, "Slaughterhouse Five," Vonnegut's youth, writing as trade, science, how lousy "Slapstick" was, the (least) funniest jokes ever created, and numerous other tidbits. It also happens to contain one of his most harrowing and unforgettable descriptions of his time at Dresden, which he also calls "the fastest killing of large numbers of people - one hundred and thirty-five thousand people in a matter of hours." The following interview with Robert Musil from 1980 covers much of the same ground, though with an interesting observation on "Dr. Strangelove" and a sneak peek at his then latest novel "Deadeye Dick."

Time warp then to 1992 and eavesdrop in on a conversation with Vonnegut and Joseph Heller that appeared in Playboy. Their more than interesting relationship comes to live in this unique three-way interview. Their stories even contradict at times. One interesting passage involves Vonnegut claiming to have written a screenplay with Steven Wright (a quick web search reveals that the project eventually fizzled). And the interviewer gets personal about intimate topics that makes Vonnegut cry out "my goodness!" In the end, Heller and Vonnegut seem to share a fundamentally pessimistic view of the human race, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

Then whoosh to 2006. Vonnegut's final book, "A Man Without A Coutry" has been released during the Bush years. He discusses the transition from writing to drawing - his prints remain available today on his official posthumous website. At one point he clearly states "I'm all through writing," which may remind some of his "it's all plays now" in the introduction to "Happy Birthday, Wanda June." But he meant it this time, whether his will or the inevitable kept him from publishing again. Apart from this, he had some very strong words for the state of his country at the time and what he saw as the coming inevitable and unstoppable environmental collapse.

Lastly, 2007 arrives. "The Last Interview" of the book's title really refers to two extremely short interviews Vonnegut gave early that year that appeared in May and June following his death. Though they cover a lot of material already covered earlier in the book, they actually sum up the philosophy of Vonnegut's final years very effectively. Their brevity does speak to his condition, though, which makes for slightly depressing reading, especially as one ends with the words: "But I gotta go. I'm not well. Good luck."

With those words closes one of the twentieth century's most fascinating, controversial and adored authors. He often said in speeches that his works will die with him. And though many literature departments haven't seemed to embrace him as one of their own, his works remain strongly in print to this day. Doubtless they will make a seamless transition to e-books and to the more and more sadly neglected classics shelves. All things must pass as they say, but Vonnegut's work will likely take longer to pass than most things in this world. So it will go.
