Not useful

I strongly suspect that a lot of the reviews for this book are fake (most are not verified purchases, and they're overwhelmingly positive when the book has a lot of shortcomings). First off, the book is written in a very amateurish style. Although this would have been forgivable if the book contained really great content, it doesn't. The grammatical errors and junior high essay feel get old really fast.

The information in this book is incredibly vague. The author has tried to cover everything, and ends up covering nothing in enough depth to be meaningful. At one point, it says, "In the rush and excitement of putting up a business, most business owners forget establishing the legal identity of their businesses altogether." Wait, what? What kind of adult business owner would do that? It's pretty well known (at least in the US and most other industrialized nations) that you have to get your business established legally before you do anything significant with your business. Please do yourself a favor and completely ignore the brief and painfully bad section on your options for legal entities. There are entire books devoted to that subject, and your best choice will vary based on where you live and what you intend to do with the business. Talk to your accountant and/or lawyer about what's best for you.

In general, if you have an idea in your head and you're looking for the details on how to go from idea to finished product and make a business of it, this is absolutely not the book for you. It tells you you'll spend a lot of time picking fabric, but it doesn't tell you anything about good fabric marketplaces, tips for selecting good fabric, how to know how much to order, and how to determine a price for your clothing based on the cost of producing your clothing. It tells you CAD (computer-aided design) is an option for creating your pieces, but it doesn't recommend software, places to learn how to use the software, or how much you can expect to spend on software.

It talks about getting your line into clothing stores, but only in a very vague way without any of the details you'd need to know HOW to do that. There's a lot involved there - knowing how to locate the right contact, how to approach and persuade, how to negotiate the contract, what to expect in terms of their demands, etc.

Basically, nothing in the book goes into any more depth than what you'd get from a simple web article. Between that and the bad grammar, I would highly recommend that you save your time and money and pick a different book.

very limited info for adults

It was only when I got to the end of this book, that I saw it listed by the publisher in a children's book list. That probably explains why I didn't find it useful. It contains the most basic observations that would probably only be useful to children. I don't wish to discourage any adults who are thinking of trying to start a fashion business, but if you read this book and think that it contains useful advice, that you don't consider to be only stating the plainly obvious and common knowledge, then you probably should save yourself the trouble, and forget business.

I'm glad that I only spent $3-50 on this book. Thanks to amazon for revolutionising the book selling industry. But that relief is tainted by the thought that this would have almost bought me a coffee, which would have taken me longer to consume, and provided more value to my life than this book did. Well, we all must live with some regrets in life, and at least this book was a rather brief and relatively painless one.

I'd be interested to know how many of the people who have given this book glowing reviews have gone on to create successful fashion lines, given it seems to have been written many years ago.

Start it up!

This book was a good read and very easy to understand. It appeals to the readers, and encourages them to be right on track should they decide to open the clothing line. It's a short book, but I believe it gives you everything you need to start a business (especially clothes). It does not only talk about what kind of clothes should you be putting in your lines and collections, but also the legal aspect. It's worth reading from cover to cover.

The author has once again produced a well written book on a awful subject area during WW ll. As with his other books concerning that war it is well researched and composed for the reader to understand the subject matter.

This is a self-help guide to the american government, which states blatantly obvious observations of human character and uses horribly convoluted stories to drive home idiotically simple lessons that could be easily found in another book (with a lot less filler). For Christ's sake just read The 48 Laws of Power. This book is NOT about the politics, its about social dynamics and power struggles with a political theme. Some people love to commend Chris for being so unbiased throughout this book, but considering this book isn't on actual political ideology's and really just on people and power, its very obvious that his bias is unimportant.

His rules (which suck) are the only thing that have any substance in this book. And there is literally a mirrored law for each one in the 48 Laws of Power, which are so much more straight forward and wholesome.

Chris Matthews set out to write an honest rulebook on how the game of politics is played and he did just that. It is a nonpartisan guide. Matthews believes that the rules of politics apply to every human life, not just to senators and congressmen. Here are some of the rules of politics as put forth by Matthews:

1. It is not who you know, it is who you get to know. Washington is like working in a big Company where it is who you know is more important than what you know. The key to your success in life is based upon your personal relationships. Nearly everyone in Washington owes their job to a personal friend.

2. All politics is local.

3. It is better to receive than give. Ask for help. The more someone invests in you, the more committed they become to seeing you succeed. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "If you want to make a friend, let someone do you a favor."

4. Dance with the one that brung ya. It is about loyalty to your side. Think about the loyalty that Ronald Reagan had to the conservative movement.

5. Keep your ememies in front of you. Great politicians always stay on speaking terms with fierce opponents to show strength, obtain useful information and because they know that they may have to call on the opponent as an ally some day.

6. Don't get mad, don't get even, get ahead. Focus on getting past your adversaries.

7. Leave no shot unanswered. Always respond to attacks quickly and effectively by attacking the credibility of your opponent, ridicule your opponent, and reverse the attack so it backfires against your opponent.

8. Only talk when it improves the silence. Know when to speak and when to listen.

9. Always concede on principal. In many cases, the best way to achieve one's goal is to concede the argument. Great politicians often negotiate by telling their adversaries exactly what they want to hear. By conceding the principal at issue, they manipulate their critics into accepting their views.

10. Hang a lantern on your problem. When in doubt, get it out.

11. Spin, spin & spin. Always turn negatives into positives.

12. The press is the enemy.

13. Have the reputation of power. Political leaders become powerful by appearing powerful. There are six ways to appear powerful. They are: play your strengths, lowballing, sandbagging, creating new commandments, passing the buck, and put your opponent in a "put up or shut up" position.

14. Positioning yourself to the voters as they desire to see you.

Innovation viewed through a social lens

A short book, written from the perspective of a research interested in the links between "Technology" and "Society". To me the book was worth reading if only for its focus on two insights.

a) Innovation is about social change. A new product, a new technology, that does not provoke changes of behaviour will end up just being a foot note in some academic record. Socially irrelevant.

b) Radical innovations tend to appear in the intersection between disciplines. Specialized organizations produce incremental innovations. Radical innovations require a more open environment. The history of the development of Internet, covered in the book, is a good example.

A quick read, non academical.

About the Author
Pam Locker is the subject leader for Design for Exhibition and Museums at the University of Lincoln. She has worked as a museum and exhibition designer and consultant for a range of projects and organisations in Britain and Europe. As a Principal Teaching Fellow she has a special interest in the use of communication design in education. She has developed an online resource, 'Pencils and Pixels,' that uses filmed demonstrations to teach design students about drawing as a means of communication. Pam is a member of the Chartered Society of Designers and holds Professional Membership of the Higher Education Academy FHEA.

Entry-level

If you are a junior designer or brand new to exhibition design, then this book may be helpful, but I was expecting a little more substance. If you have more experience, then this is not the book for you. Some other books in the "basics" series have taken a bit of a deeper dive, but this one is definitely basic.

I gave it 3 stars because it's not a bad book, it just didn't meet my needs. This is a decent intro to the practice, but I don't recommend if you are not a beginner.

Students perspective

The book itself, is visually pleasing. It's use of colour and layout meant that it was easy to navigate through the book, not being bored by endless amounts of text. The book communicates a better understanding of the complexity in exhibition design. It explains thoroughly the different aspects of exhibition design, and the way it affects the world, and how dependant on the size and importance of the exhibition it can be used for commercial and even cultural purposes.

Reading through the book there were many examples of exhibitions or expo's, however it most cases it would only simply mention the name of the exhibition, and re frame from going into further detail. It would of also been beneficial to include more diagrams, of previous exhibitions, precedent that's already available, with various sections and plans including the scale on each drawing.

Instead of this book providing students like me with detailed precedents, of various exhibitions it simply explains all of the components of this form of design. Breaking it down and explaining the individual features and what have an effect on the overall design of an exhibition space. Which is very good for people who are trying to grasp the concept of expo design, as it explores the fundamental topics with clear diagrams and includes various examples of work from both students and professionals work.

Overall its a good buy for students, it's the first platform I would use to help in understanding and comprehending the theoretical designing of exhibitions.
